Even though the Shahid-bebo break-up is history by now, we couldn't help but ask Shahid's mum Neelima Azim the reasons which led to their fallout when we spoke to her recently. After much reluctance, Neelima spoke to Indiatimes Movies about the controversies surrounding her forthcoming film, tiff with ex-husband Pankaj Kapur, her alleged 'dislike' for Kareena and her estranged relationship with son Shahid Kapur!
Why did Shahid-Kareena choose to part ways according to you?
You will be surprised to know but I am still not aware of the reasons that led to their fallout! I have never interfered in Shahid's personal life. I didn't even ask him what went wrong, nor did he tell me what had happened!
Since Shahid and you don't get along?
Shahid and I had few differences but that has been sorted out. We have no problems any more. Besides, Shahid is capable of handling his problems all by himself. The media is unnecessarily spreading these talks about bitterness between Shahid and me.
Do you and Shahid hang out together, as in go for the movies, spend quality time together etc?
I don't want to comment on that.
If rumours are to be believed, you were in fact happy for Shahid's break-up, since you didn't like Kareena. Comment
I couldn't stop crying when Shahid and Kareena broke up! It would be very nasty of me if I rejoiced on my son's heartbreak! Can any mother do that?
What was your equation with Kareena?
As a matter of fact I got along very well with her! She was very close to me for about a year. I used to chat with her quite often. However, whatever I had with her, kind of drifted apart later. I have no angst against her whatsoever. Today if I find her in the same room as me, I won't hesitate to talk to her.
Shahid is often addressed as a 'lone ranger' in media these days.
He doesn't need to be treated like that! He is gem of a person. He is humble, hard-working and extremely caring. Even as a teenager, he never indulged in drinking or partying like his fellow friends would do. Any woman who gets Shahid would be the luckiest woman on earth and I am not saying this because he is my son. People who know him well will second my opinion.
You are making a debut as a filmmaker soon?
Yes, my film is going to be satire, very tongue-in-cheek, hilarious... nobody has ever made a film like that. The film makes a statement about people's generosity as people from all walks of life get together. I am a dancer, poet and actor and my film will replicate my attributes. The film is commercial, finely made and will appeal to the classes and masses.
What is the film all about?
The film revolves around the lives of two women. I play one of the characters and I don't want to reveal much about the film right now.
It has been reported that Shahid is doing an item song in your film.
The press has been talking about this for a long time now, how dare they even think about it? I come from a royal family and so does Shahid. I am listed in the top 10 dancers of the world! I started to learn Kathak from Pandit Birju Maharaj when I was 15 years old. I come from a highly dignified background and so does my son. Forget about my film, I hope Shahid never gets into this 'item song' business for anybody!
So he is not doing the item song?
(Smiles), I hope he would never do an item song in my film. For all you know, you may get to see him dance with me but definitely not on an item song. He will be an integral part of my film.
Pankaj Kapoor being a fantastic actor, will you ask him to act in your film in future, keeping your differences aside?
Why should I? He hasn't sent a paisa to me when I was raising Shahid! I have brought up my son all by myself! Besides, my entire family has had an illustrious career. My father was a noted journalist-short story writer who had won a Noble prize; mother a renowned Urdu-English translator. I am not impressed by anyone anymore.
And Shahid is just following their footsteps?
Yes, he is... with his hard work and dedication. His latest film Jab We Met is doing well. He has got everything that takes to be a successful actor. Dreamy eyes which have that spark in them, electric body language when he dances and fine acting.

In the past Kareena and Shahid's mom Neelima got along really well - infact Shahid joked about the two 'Kareena and my mom are like a house on fire' but looks like the fire created too much heat as Bebo had a showdown with Neelima. Kareena and Neelima's differences even lead to Shahid moving out of his house and buying an apartment at Yari road in the same building where his father Pankaj Kapoor resides with his second wife Supriya Pathak. While Kareena kept tight-lipped about the fight it was Neelima who went out to the press and told them about how Bebo influenced Shahid to move out. Shahid on the other hand held that he always dreamt of living independent and also wanted to live near his dad. Kareena is very fond of Shahid's dad Pankaj and step mom Supriya, she also joined them on their Europe trip for a couple of days, seeing Kareena getting close to Pankaj-n-Supriya, Neelima sure realized that it's better to patch up with Kareena and surprisingly Bebo was very forgiving. Burying the past Kareena has started bonding really well with Neelima when Shahid is out of town she makes it a point to take his mom out for dinners too, now that sound's like a perfect bahu in making to us |
