Salman & Sonu attend Ganpati pooja

Tuesday evening's aarti at the huge and popular Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati Mandal had starry participation. Bollywood macho man Salman Khan and singer Sonu Niigaam, both guests of The Times of India Moorti Sanman, showed up for the aarti and paid obeisance to the Ganpati idol that legend has it is blessed with miraculous powers.
The first miracle was that Salman reached Lalbaug at 8.25 pm for the aarti that was to start at 9. Bollywood stars are notorious for running behind time, but here he was nice and early. Braving heavy showers of rain, chaotic traffic, and a surge of over six lakh devotees (every single one of them a fan), Salman stood patiently in a corner waiting for the prayers to start.
His arrival, however, hastened the pace. The mandal authorities, fearing a stampede by the restless crowd, started the aarti soon.
After the aarti Salman had left. Then a brightly-attired Sonu Niigaam, who had arrived by then, enthusiastically and fervently participated in it, clapping his hands in time to the music with head bowed and eyes closed in reverence. Sonu did the honours, singing in Marathi, to the pride of the sea of delighted devotees.
Salman is a Ganpati bhakt, his love for Mumbai's favourite God coming from his mother Salma's (a Maharashtrian Hindu) devotion to Lord Ganesh. "We practice all religions at home.
We have a place of worship for every God. My parents have inculcated the values of all faiths in us," Salman told BT, adding, "Religion is a personal thing. I love all Gods, but I practice what I want within the four walls of my home."
And it is true, if there is an iftaar being held at sundown at the Khan residence in Bandra west to break Ramzan's roza, then there are also prayers being offered to Lord Ganesh. "God is one," said Salman, "We call him by various names." ( how very true
