Deepa Mehta is set to start working on her next film, Heaven on Earth, on Nov. 5.
Mehta, an Oscar nominee for her 2005 film Water, has written and will direct the film to be shot in English in Toronto and India.
Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, shown in Mumbai in 2004, will take the lead in Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth.
(Rajesh Nirgude/Associated Press) The feature-length drama is the story of a young Indian woman who finds herself in an abusive arranged marriage with an Indo-Canadian.
She creates an alternative reality to survive in her new world, allowing Mehta to explore the themes of imagination and mysticism, as well as domestic abuse.
The part of the young bride, Chand, will be played by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta.
Seema Biswas, who was acclaimed for her role in Water, will also be part of the cast
The story was inspired, in part, by Let's Talk About It, a documentary Mehta made about Indian women in Canada who are victims of domestic abuse.
To make that documentary, which aired on OMNI TV, she gave cameras to the children of Toronto-area families and encouraged them to pose questions to their parents.
Water earned $2.2-million in Canada and $13 million worldwide, according to a release from Mehta's backers, Mongrel Media.
