Vidya 'Sharma' Malvade may not have appeared to be SRK's heroine in Chak De but there's no doubt that she had many scenes and all she wants is to retain those moments. Vidya Malvade was in the middle of a shot (for an incense stick ad film) when I walked in to Billabong High School in Goregaon. The petite model, in a body-hugging red dress flirting with the camera over innumerable retakes, was a sharp contrast to the shy captain of India's national women's hockey team—Malvade's onscreen character in Chak De! India. I had watched the superbly-executed film the previous night and her performance was still fresh in my mind. I was convinced that Chak De's success was yet to make a 'star' out of her. "During the eight-nine months of shooting, we just wore track suits. Dressing up seemed quite a 'big thing' then," laughs Malvade. "Being a model, I was used to looking glamorous on screen. It was an altogether different experience to shoot with oiled plaits."
Post Chak De — a Yash Raj Films production — the 32-year-old's acting career (her earlier film, Inteha, bombed at the BO) is certainly looking up. She has been cast opposite Sanjay Dutt in Sanjay Gadhvi's Kidnap and is also acting in Atul Sabrewal's Junction with Ranvir Shorey and Abhay Deol.
Interestingly, Malvade candidly shares her dream of playing the quintessential heroine to Shah Rukh Khan. In the film, her character is linked to Khan's Kabir Khan, still she doesn't appear to be his heroine.
"I had more sequences with him in the film; I wish they were retained. I hope one day I'll be cast as his heroine," says Malvade. Two of Khan's biggest fans (she and me) are soon ebulliently discussing his stubble. "One of us told him he looked hot with the stubble; it left him blushing," she laughs.
