The actor has been saving five-rupee coins for 20 years

Don't be surprised if you see a box full of five-rupee coins around Manoj Bajpai.

Not many know that the actor has been collecting these coins for the last 20 years. He not only saves them but also gives them to needy people.

It begins

Calling it a habit more than a hobby, he says, "I've been collecting five-rupee coins more out of a need to do so rather than a hubby. This goes back to my early college days and when I was struggling as an actor.

I got into this habit of collecting these five-rupee coins when I was in Delhi. At that point of time, saving money was a priority and I would use the coins to cover up expenses like travelling, food, tea, etc."

As time passed, Manoj got into the habit of putting five-rupee coins in a box. "I would find any box and start putting in coins. I've never counted the amount I've collected."

Even though he is comfortably settled in life and has earned a name for himself, Manoj still hasn't stopped collecting the coins. "In a way, it constantly reminds me of my roots and my journey to the point I have reached today."

At the moment, Manoj's coin box is empty since he has given the money off to someone in need. "I have to start off again."

Crazy coincidence

Interestingly, the character in his forthcoming film Swami does something similar. Calling it a crazy coincidence, he says, "It's bizarre.

Swami is one of those rare films that I said yes to in the first narration itself. When I was told that my character has a habit of collecting five-rupee coins, I was taken aback.

Neither Ganesh (Acharya) nor any one else knew about this habit of mine. All this makes me feel that I was destined to be a part of Swami."

Calling it a film with soul, Manoj adds it was tough portraying someone with such innocence. "It's funny but some of the simplest characters are the hardest to play.

I had a tough time playing the role of a guy who worships honesty and believes in simplicity. But the experience was amazing and I hope everyone enjoys the film."
