When would adoption get a sanctity of a film star
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network |
Angelina Jolie has already done it twice times over, and is on the look out for it to do it the third time, while Madonna is also on the look out for it to do it the third time. What is being talked about here is the adoption of the children that these celebrity film stars of Hollywood have been doing it for quite some time, Madonna and Angelina emerging as the latest celebrities to promote it. But in the case of India the field is baron and sparse, the only oasis being a gusty Sushmita Sen, who has the guts to become an unwed mother in the real life by adopting a daughter.
Why is it that the Indian film stars do not go for adoption of a child which apart from promoting the cause of the destitute children, would also encourage the common citizen to emulate their feat in same proposition. They would rather love to be issueless than be bold enough to adopt a child, though they might have played the characters of the same, or would have adopted the child in the various roles that they might have etched out on the silver screen. Most celebrated example of this kind who could have made a profound impact are Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu who could have been the perfect brand ambassadors to the cause of an orphan but they have not done so? Has it got something to do with the social scenario where adopting a child whose parents are not known is viewed with a great sense of trepidation.
The flip side of the same is that the celebrities of Hollywood are adopting children from the countries, which are destitute or have just appearing on the radar of progress in economic terms as a blip. None of the celebrities seem to have adopted an orphan child from there respective countries. By doing the same are they giving the message that they are in their own way bringing to light the abject state of those children and are doing a great charity by adopting them. The controversy that has emerged around Madonna with her last child that she is on the verge of adopting points towards the same. She has also gone on record to say so as well, that by adopting her she is striving to give that child a secure economic future. Adoption still continues to be a stigma in the Indian film industry, and has it got something to the fact that it may emerge as a telling comment on the virility of the stars under question. Sushmita Sen's bold initiative does not seem to suggest that. But she still is alone in her effort; nobody seems ready to follow in her footsteps.
It is also intriguing why Sushmita Sen has not been made a Brand Ambassador for adoption of Child by the authorities of the country, and more so for the cause of the girl child, because she went ahead and adopted a girl child though she could always have adopted a boy child. With the issue of girl child haunting the country, and Sushmita practicing the same without pretence, it is high time she is given the due recognition by the government. This recognition would also add feather in the cap of the industry as well, as it would get a cause to espouse about, in wake of the recognition that Sushmita might be accorded.
