The best of romance from Bollywood

Shri 420 (1955)
If it's the best of Bollywood romantic scenes we are talking about, here is the baap of them all. The 'original' rain song with Raj Kapoor, Nargis and a black umbrella as the lead actors. The song Pyar hua ikraar hua, on which the sequence was picturised, can still have you swaying teary eyed, wishing you were in Bombay and the skies had just opened up. Subtle yet intensely romantic, they don't make songs like this any more.

Mughal-e-Azam (1960)
On a moonlit night, two lovers are at play. An ostrich feather slides slowly down a silken cheek. And… it's goose bump time. This scene between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala was eroticism at its best (well, definitely for the 60s). Today, subtlety has lost its charm. Now, if the hero and heroine do not have a full-blown kiss or some rough and tumble in bed, then the audience wonders where the romance is. Sigh!

Aradhana (1969)

This was one of the unforgettable performances by Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. The duo sizzled in this classic and every frame spoke volumes. Audiences will surely remember the feelings of love, desire and frustration, that they could practically cut with a knife, in the song Roop tera mastana.

Bobby (1973)

Hum tum ek kamre mein bandh ho… No, this was not a movie made before its time nor were the actors preaching free love. But this mischievous yet sensual song did make the careers of two budding stars—Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor. They soon became India's sweethearts and went on to do more than just create magic in that locked room.

Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973)

The movie may have been pure maudlin sentimentality, but it still did have its moments. Zeenat Aman in a flowing white dress with a guitar in hand serenading Vijay Anand with the sultry Chura liya was one such. Men fell in love, boys became men overnight, and Zeenat became the ideal woman and centrefold girl all rolled in one.

Silsila (1981)

If there was any film that could have given credence to the rumours about Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan, it was this one. The raw chemistry between the two was all but tangible. Like in the scene where the two hold hands and he hums Neela asmaan so gaya.
More recently, Rekha came out and said on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal that 'of course she loved Amitabh' (after all, who doesn't). No wonder then that years ago everyone had believe the film's tag line—Love is faith and faith is forever.

Mr India (1987)
It could very well have passed for a children's movie if not for some gruesome shenanigans by Mr Mogambo and, of course, a sexy 'item' number by Sridevi. Clad in a thin blue chiffon sari, she swayed and sighed, singing Kaate nahin katte as a now-visible-now-invisible Anil Kapoor flirted with her.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
Come fall in love, the film said. And a love-starved nation did just that. This yuppie romance was a trendsetter—from the humour, to the love story, to the storyline that was tailor-made for the NRI audience.
While there were innumerable romantic, tearjerker scenes (how about the one where Kajol feeds Shah Rukh on the roof after their fight), the one that remains etched in people's memories is the scene in the mustard fields where Raj reunites with Simran.

Raja Hindustani (1996)

Everybody wanted to watch the film when it was released. Not because the script was brilliant or the acting mind blowing. But because Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor had a steamy lip-lock. And glory be, in the rain, too!
One of the longest and steamiest smooches in Bollywood history, this one set the tills ringing and the box office ratings climbing.

Yuva (2004)

Love is forever and lovers will do anything, even die, for each other. However, Mani Ratnam shattered that illusion into a million pieces with Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji's love story. But he did not leave us with a completely bleak picture. In the bittersweet song Kabhie neem-neem, kabhie shahed-shahed he showed us that even dysfunctional couples can have their tender moments.
