Carbohydrate and Diary Intolerance is real (due to a lack of certain digestive enzymes). It can be temporary. People with such food intolerance can enjoy and eat those and won't have any immediate life-threatening reaction to them. I always hear people with food intolerance address it as allergy. Some Supertasters I know can't have tea, but I can (but not green tea).

Supertasters have biological variations in taste and smell, similar to other human features skin and eye colour. There is nothing super about it. On the good side, most of us can't have alcohol, sodas or smoke. The downside is that we have little choice in healthy food, mainly vegetables. I can't have cucumber, watermelon, musk melon, zucchini, eggplant, pumpkin, lamb, bell pepper, olives, dark chocolate, celery, asparagus, specific types of mushrooms, seaweed (roasted - can have, but not steam cooked), blue cheese (but mozzarella, gouda, parmesan - yes), anything too sweet, and so on. They all taste repulsive; a few cases ended up throwing up when tried.

Food scientists are aware of us, but not most doctors. Most supertasters are women but I got it from my father. We have increased chances of colon cancer.

We have a small group on Facebook with a few hundred people from different parts of the world; we are not the same; some of them can't have the food I enjoy. There is a vegan girl in the group, and She lives mainly on ramen and vitamin tablets.

She is confused in regard to what food she is allergic to. One day she is eating rice, another day she becomes allergic to rice.

That sounds incredibly challenging, not just physically but mentally also. Makes me be even more grateful because I can practically eat anything, though a few things here and there don’t agree with my stomach if I eat them 2-3 days in a row.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It was very informative.

Welcome. smiley1

We have an acute sense of taste and smell and can taste some chemicals in food that most people can't. Yes It's very emotionally taxing if you don't have supporting people around. My husband tastes the food when we try new ones before me; he gets 90% of the time right about whether I can handle it or not. Like you, he can practically eat everything, and I am so jealous. I always had to explain my situation to people when I got invited for lunch or dinner. My dentist remembers me as the one who has a cucumber allergy. smiley1

Growing up with this variation was challenging. I have a very expressive face; it is hard to cover up the grimace if I taste something that is not palatable, and I literally shiver. I got called off at the dining table numerous times (not my parents) for not eating vegetables, making faces or mixing foods to make them edible.

My father and I didn't know we were supertasters; We have similar preferences for food ingredients. We had high spice tolerance, which made a few things more manageable. When my father cooks, he doesn't cook veggies where he can't stand the smell. Since my mother dealt with my father before me, she won't include those veggies. But when I went to boarding school, they had this stupid rule to eat everything served on the plate. I dreaded the days we got sambar (mixed vegetable curry) or similar dishes. There were a few times I was forced to eat cucumber and okra, and I threw up one time. Recently, I ordered mango lassi at a restaurant, but it was too sour for me; I asked for sugar, and he refused, saying that is not how you have it. A lot of people do get offended if someone has food in a different or non-traditional way.

There are not many studies about us. As my father grew old, he started putting more salt on everything he made. Nobody could eat them except him. Elders in the Facebook group mentioned it's gotten worse for some of them. So, I am just hoping against all odds.
