I am a big Madhuri fan but won't hesitate to say that Khal Nayak was NOT A BLOCK BUSTER, but just a super hit, although it ranked at number 2 just after AANKHAIN.

Baazigar comes at 4th number and was a super hit.

The only blockbuster of 1993 was AANKHAIN, that's it.

The online links most probably just throws away the term block buster carelessly to emphasize the big business, but in reality block buster and super hit are two entirely different classifications.

I wish I would have those printed trade journals (the most authentic source for boxoffice, even till date) to show you the boxoffice classifications by those very well esteemed and known trade pandits.

I'm shocked though that even Khal Nayak was not considered a blockbuster. Especially considering all the hype for the movie and its rather infamous song. Not to mention Sanjay and Madhuri at the height of their popularity.

It's funny how Aankhen is mostly forgotten compared to Khal Nayak, Darr, and Baazigar yet that's the only one that was characterized as a true blockbuster back then.

I wish the online sources were more reliable then. They shouldn't inflate numbers just to claim other films are blockbusters if they weren't originally considered that. Yes, it's a pity those printed trade journals aren't readily available now.

But he was ESTABLISHED as a SUPERSTAR and a ROMANTIC SOLO LEAD only with DDLJ which he carried forward for the next many years.

Superstar, yes, that was DDLJ which made him a superstar. But my original point was that his stardom came from Baazigar (and Darr as well) and stardom only requires one to be considered a star, not a superstar. Especially because most of our big actors today would only be considered stars with very few superstars like SRK, Salman, Big B, etc. And even less choices for actresses.

Yes Khal Nayak was not a block buster either.

It is funny to see BOI ranked even a film like Rangeela (although I loved this movie) as a block buster, while in reality as per the printed trade journals that I read, Rangeela was a super hit that too only in the big cities and metros, while it was declared as above average/semi hit at smaller centres, yet Boi declared it as a block buster which it certainly was not.

Aamir Khan is also a superstar.

Tere Naam has the defence of being Released almost 2 decades back and also the character ending up in mental asylum

We were rewatching Ready yday. The amount of misogyny (and racism) in that movie by Salman's "positive" character was as shocking as it was cringe.

How on earth u have the courage to REWATCH a snooze fest and utterly non engaging Ready again!? 🤔 😳

I watched it just once in theaters and used to sleep/took naps after every 10 to 15 minutes coz this movie was THAT MUCH BORING (same with Dhoom 3 and PATTHAN, took naps so many times during these two as well in the cinema).

Oh No, leave Tere Naam and Raadhe alone.

He had good intention, he couldn't live without her, his passion was different.

Talk about toxic, Dev from Khabie Alvida naa kehna was really toxic, that too for no reason.

(Kudos to SRK, he played the role really well). 👏

There's a whole load of toxic stuff in every scene with him having interactions with his wife and some with the 'other' woman.

Ready, housefull, Golmaal all have things like this. Even Kal Ho Naa Ho w the homophobic maid. I guess since it’s comedy movies people overlook the stuff just label it cringe and move on. In serious movies tho they get called out more

Rangeela is also a favorite of mine and one of my favorite Aamir movies alongside Raja Hindustani, QSQT, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and Fanaa. Shocked to learn even Rangeela was not characterized as a blockbuster. At least it gets to be a super hit. I'm not surprised to hear though that while it did really well in the big cities, it wasn't as big a film elsewhere because I can imagine some of it was considered ahead of its time especially Urmila's character and looks. This was still the era where taking on a sexy, daring role like this would get you typecast as not a serious actress and willing to do anything onscreen.

Yes agreed. What's funny about Aamir is that he's a very different breed of superstar though compared to the other names I listed. If you look at Big B, SRK, and Salman, they are basically worshipped by the masses or their fans and treated like gods. Aamir has never been put on that same pedestal. He has love and respect but fans do not worship him like they do the others. I think his private nature is part of that plus part of his image is that he has kept himself distant from the public and doesn't want that craze factor around him.
