Soni Razdan says she made Alia Bhatt travel in economy class as a child because she hadn’t ‘earned enough’: ‘There was never any excess money’

Soni Razdan recalled how her kids, Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt, had a middle-class upbringing as they lived in a 2BHK in Alia's childhood.

Alia Bhatt grew up in the world of movies as her father Mahesh Bhatt is a filmmaker and mother Soni Razdan is an actor. Even though Alia’s life looked luxurious to others, her mother recalled that she gave her children a “typical middle-class upbringing” as there was “never any excess money.”

In a chat with Rashmi Uchil for her book Rasing Stars, Soni recalled an incident when she was traveling to Dubai with her daughters Alia and Shaheen but since they could not afford three business-class tickets, she made her kids travel in economy. “Once, we were travelling to Dubai and could not afford three business-class tickets. I told my children, ‘I will travel first class, and you guys travel economy.’ They made a face. When I went to check on them, I saw the lady in the seat right in front of them had reclined her seat, and these children had hardly any space in front of them. I told my children, ‘Why don’t you ask her to straighten her seat? Are you guys okay?’ They were miffed and retorted, ‘Why are you asking us how we are doing? We will not tell her anything.’ The lady in front of them was a senior citizen and they felt bad telling her to straighten her seat” It wasn’t a big deal at all.”

Soni shared her point of view behind getting her kids to travel economy and said, “My logic was you have not earned enough to travel in business class as yet. Once you earn enough to afford the business class fare, please travel in business class. Simple as that.”

This has the same energy as Ranveer's family not being rich and only being able to afford to go to US for most summers.

The rich wanna be poor so bad. If it were up to me, I would put them all in a Big Boss like simulation with actual poor and middle class upbringing for a year.

My mom would have sat in the economy class with me...or whichever class in a train, bus,cruise..

Weird b/c I know of parents who would sit in economy & forego the business class option.

But I do know of well-off people who sit in business & make their children sit in economy. A lot of celebs do it. Gordon Ramsay too, has spoken about this & said he practices this with his children.

Not to be a party pooper, but wealth etc is relative & BW people live in their own world lol. For them travelling in economy, IS being middle-class.

They update you to first class if you let them check your bags

I am having a hard time believing all this so she had the money to travel in business class but willing to put her daughters to economic class? And she visited Dubai and did shopping.

Did she fed them well? Aliaa did mentioned that she would go and visit the shooting sets to eat food. I am sorry but this is not right if she really did this. Mahesh bhatt was very good director of his time. Actors dreamed to work with him.

How could Soni being a mom sit in a different section??😳

Most importantly, Economy isn’t all that bad as these ppl are making it out to be. 😀

They wanna appear so relatable that they end up making a fool of themselves.

I know normal people who vacation in australia, UK, brag about dining at $$$ restaurants and proudly call themselves middle class… ye log toh fir bhi celebrity hain

Rich people’s idea of middle class is very different from middle class people’s understanding of middle class

I’m really baffled by her thought process of telling children they cannot have certain privileges because they don’t have the money, but then showing off that privilege right in their faces as their mother. They were just kids and she told them you two can’t enjoy this thing because you’re not making any money of your own. And the middle class angle by her is BS. She wanted to save money but still pamper herself. How long is a Mumbai-Dubai flight? 3 hours? She needed to be in a first class seat for three hours rather than stay with her kids? 🤨
