Reviews are average to good. Not seeing any great reviews 😔 Just one has hit 4 stars
General consensus seems to be Vicky has knocked it out of the park, but Meghana has fluffed it with a lazy screenplay and she has not pumped in enough patriotic moments to elevate the film to be popular amongst general audience. Anecdotal Biopics don't work in our country unless backed with heavy patriotic or social messaging
One of my fav couples. Both are so positive. They look good together. I don't want them on KWK at all.
It would be easy to describe Sam Bahadur as a Vicky Kaushal show because it is who dominates every major scene in the film.

Hmmm some reviews on Vicky’s performance
“Vicky Kaushal is known to nail his roles and breathe life into his characters and he did it again with Sam Manekshaw but the lack of character arc and depth did not help the cause. The actor played the role of Sam Bahadur with conviction but there wasn’t much he could do to save the film. No thanks to the shoddy writing. Irrespective, the actor perfected the poise and aura of an Army Office and aced the dialogue delivery but no one can ever ape Sam Manekshaw like Sam himself!”
“Early on, it sometimes feels like Vicky Kaushal playing Dev Anand playing Manekshaw, with the dad jokes and singsong voice and crooked posture. It’s an entertaining turn but Kaushal gets caught up in the accent and the stoop. There’s no interiority, no sense of Sam the thinking individual (part of why Kaushal was so effective in Uri was the suggestion that his major genuinely didn’t have an inner life). There’s no spark between Sam and Silloo (Sanya Malhotra), right from their first meeting at a party where he tells her, “I’m going to marry you."”
“Vicky Kaushal’s performance is sincere but sketchy. In most parts of the film, he feels bogged down by the effort to ape Sam Bahadur. From his walk, his mannerisms, to the way he would pucker up his lips or walk with a hunch, all of it feels a bit like a sketch. But then there are also moments where he shines through the grey clouds of incoherent writing. The fault doesn’t lie with the actor but the editors and writers who wrote good parts but couldn't stitch them together.”
“The ever-so-dependable Vicky Kaushal is in there from frame zero. He puts in so much effort to bring back Sam Manekshaw through him, and at times, those efforts actually cross some boundaries. Full marks for the physical mannerisms, but the accent gets too inconsistent throughout. At times, he’s literally mimicking Dev Anand & I understand Sam had a very peculiar accent, but the tone Kaushal catches isn’t streamlined to be of the same tempo. Just like Sam, he smoothly switches between languages, and that’s a tough one to crack. Vicky had everything going for being the best version of Manekshaw the movies could ever see; the writing lets him down.”
“Contrary to widespread expectations, Vicky Kaushal's portrayal in 'Sam Bahadur' doesn't claim the title of his best performance to date. Undoubtedly, the actor demonstrates a dedicated effort to step into Sam's shoes, evident particularly in the initial sequences. However, as the film progresses, his portrayal starts to feel somewhat artificial and hammed. Commendably, Kaushal excels in capturing Sam's mannerisms, especially in his posture, adding a notable touch to his performance. The delivery of dialogues is potent and leaves a lasting impact. Nevertheless, the overall performance doesn't leave the same lasting impression witnessed in films like 'Sardar Udham' or 'URI: The Surgical Strike.'”
Many many more reviews are praising him to the skies! No one can get 100 percent approval across the board! But man those must have taken a lot of work to find. Someone really has time for someone they despise. FOD why is it so easy to guess when you are behind a mid?
As a cinema lover, Sam Bahadur is one such film that you must watch only in theaters. I am not sure how audience will perceive this film but definitely Vicky will win lot of accolades and awards for this particular role. The cinematography is so good that it pleases your eyes and mind throughout. Making a historical film is a big task and yes Meghna Gulzar has done the mastery in the art of filmmaking. Despite some flaws and issues in the film, I am in awe of Meghna the director. The editing is good as its not felt lengthy and boring.
