It was great to watch a mass movie after a while. I watched the movie in tamil and it really felt very much like a tamil movie even with SRK in it. the dubbing for SRK was done well and wasn't distracting. sometimes, the dubbing feels off and it doesn't match the expressions and you are not able to enjoy the movie. so it seems SRK made some effort to make sure the other versions matched and it didn't look like the dubbing was overlaid on top of the hindi movie.

all the social commentary punches based on news events are standard in south films. so it felt very typical mass movie. the most impact was the farmer's story.

papa rathore had really cool swag and lines. it was pretty funny. I really liked the stunt scenes and all the cool freeze frames so you are able to enjoy the over-top scenes. sometimes in avenger type movies, everything flies by too quickly for you to enjoy. so I like this style more.

I felt vijay sethupathi could have been more menacing but he seemed to be just enjoying himself. it would have been better if they had given some more punch dialogues mixed in with funny scenes for vijay like they do with many villains in south films. it not only makes them more entertaining but also memorable. that way, vijay's character sketch wasn't very well done here.

I was distracted by the romantic song with nayantara and kept thinking I had seen that dress before. maybe nayan really loves that particular style but she had worn a very similar dress in a really well known song from years ago -- I actually went and checked the song to see if it was the same dress. it wasn't -- the print is different but very similar colour and style combination. hahahahaha...

I feel the romantic song could have been shot better with scenes of some actual dates and them getting closer as a family. so we would had more of a feel of romance between nayan and SRK.

so something like that would have helped elevate that arc so much. my family members felt there was not enough romance and family portion in the movie. my aunt was expecting more cute scenes with suchi and azad based on the trailer and was disappointed. so a story within a song would have helped solve that problem.

the lyrics weren't also interesting for the romance song. it just seemed like regular stuff. given it is a more mature romance, they could have used more interesting lyrics that reflect the situation and that would have also lifted the song. (the petta song above has very nice lyrics that reflect a mature romance; if interested, click on CC for subs)

in terms of music, anirudh has done better job in other movies. the songs weren't really memorable.

but overall, me and my family had a lot of fun -- it was paisa vasool and theatre was full with families.

Given the just beginning love story between Azad and Narmada, I think you're absolutely right...a kind of more we-get-to-know-us-better story with Suchi would have been good (not so much intense romance because of Arzad's secret Robin Hood persona).

I'll watch other movies where Anirudh has composed the music and sung the songs to enjoy his craft (i want to see the movies to see the songs embedded in the story). It's just a question of time...

In an interview Atlee said that he will bring an extended version of Jawan on Netflix...we will see

I was expecting azad and narmada to have a soft flirty vibe during the negotiations. I don't know if that got missed because they needed to make this movie for multiple regions and so they couldn't explore that more during the train scene.

I don't know what song they went with in the train scene in the hindi version but the song azad requested in the tamil version is this old song from the 50s/60s that has a hilarious innocent flirty vibe because of the lyrics -- the type of song that uncles would belt out after a few drinks in a party while the aunties would roll their eyes and then sing some other song in return that subverts the flirting.

so they could have used the negotiation scenes to establish more of a vibe between the two of them but perhaps that would have distracted from the whole robin hood arc.

but yea, I thought that the visuals they used for the romantic song was too typical and more in line with a younger romance. instead, if they did a story within a song format, it would have felt more of a punch when she felt betrayed by azad and felt like he had used suchi as well. something simple even like them having dinner together. we needed a bit more of that awkward getting to know each other arranged marriage style + the cute suchi bonding.

thats why azad's romance felt half baked in comparison to papa rathore which was more fleshed out.

I am personally not a fan of aniruddh as I think he is overrated but yea, he has done better in other movies. the BGM was good here but in terms of songs, it was just okay.
