lagaan sold around 2cr ticketsOriginally posted by: TorinoPasta
In which world was Lagaan a disaster?? It had a huge budget yet it was a hit. Also the film waz about cricket , it is obvious that a well made movie abt cricket in India was celebrated more. Also it got an Oscar nomination...obviously the public wont forget that.
gadar 5.05cr
insane total of that clash is 7cr plus tickets sold

He may have meant 2.5 times because that makes sense. Lagan made around 35cr and Gadar 80. Did I get the numbers right? And I think inside India both movies got the hype and everyone knew Gadar was the bigger box office movie. It’s common knowledge basically. But Lagan got nominated for an Oscar and that will always be something to hype and flaunt and boast about. Yes Aamir and his production team have a PR and use it, but who wouldn’t have if their movie got nominated for an Oscar?!! 🤷🏽♀️
Agree about Sunny and his lack of PR and diplomacy.

2-5 times is different from 2% to 5%. But yes it was a definite slip of a tongue.
And I agree about the perception created around Lagaan. I myself thought it was a much bigger film than Gadar until recently. The media works hand in gloves with certain stars and elevates them and their movies. People didn’t know about these games at that time. Now everyone knows but still they fall for these games consciously or subconsciously.
In 2001, everyone were shocked that Gadar became such a massive hit because it was seen as an underdog against a big budget movie.
In print media it was there ,even on news channels . Bombay Times,Indian express etc there were ads like biggest blockbuster of Hindi cinema, running successfully for so and so weeks.I am from that era and I had witnessed it.
People should stop with this PRcrap just to discredit Aamir.
Lagaan was a hit movie.
When you like a film you think that it is a hit,
I always thought Anand was a hit movie only after years later I found out that it was a flop.
Every year you find topics in this forum where many used to express disbelief that Andaz Apna Apna was a flop because they loved the film and they assumed that it was hit. It's perception.
Sunny himself sounds like he is trying to put some new perception 😆

I would blame this on selective memory.
Gadar opened on more screens. Since when does a smaller film open to more screens than a bigger film?
Gadar & Lagaan both had massive budgets for the time. Top 5 all time, at the time. There was no PR, but the Critics were raving about Lagaan, rightfully so and that's what Sunny Paaji is probably referring to in his semi senile age.
I have photo graphic one lol. Thats why I feel frustrated everyone cant be like me 😆
He says 5 % of Gadar which means like 6 crs , but the footfalls according to BOI are over 2crs which are a lot.
Unless ticket prices were like 10 paise i dont know if its possible 😆
The budget of the film doesn't determine the no of screens.Originally posted by: Haila_tu

It could be due to many factors and let's not forget Lagaan was a 4hr film.
Lagaan had a bigger budget.
It was perceived by many considering the comparison in production value that Lagaan as the bigger film.
The production value of Lagaan from promotion material gave such vibes be it the teaser, Ghannan, Baar baar haan in comparison to Gadar. It's songs were well received. The cricket match was kept under wraps, nobody knew it prior to the release.
I know the budget of Gadar.
Just a few weeks before the release of the film,Main Nikla O Gadi Leke promo was aired. This song became an instant chartbuster. From Music channels to Radio station, across streets, trucks, rickshaws, buses, tea stalls everywhere it was there. Those days you could sense the popularity of a song. You couldn't make out what Gadar was based on prior to it's release.
There were also articles on how there many trucks full of people who came to watch the movie.
So I feel it was naive of anyone to say that Aamir's PR made it seem as Lagaan was a bigger hit.
The only way anyone would have perceived it as a bigger hit was only after Oscars noms, especially those who were not updated with the news abt it's BO post the clash.

He doesn’t drink or smoke. But he definitely should stay away from these interviews. Just get back to the work. Very embarrassing!
Honestly I like that he has no PR training. It makes him vastly more entertaining. 😆 Otherwise most bollywood celebs bore me to death.

Salman wanted to do the remake of that Italian film on which Sitaare Zameen par had been made, he share this with Aamir. Instead of leaving it...
