When I read what you write, I understand how you see the movie but I think I saw another movie than you...or I saw it in another way.
I remember very distinctly that Naina is deeply unhappy with her home life but feels fine in Rohit's presence (he makes her forget her sorrows)...she even thinks about him as a very nice guy (the dinner invitation with the elderly woman from the evening school) and sees him as a CLOSE friend to her (we also get to know that she notices him writing in his black diary which later becomes a life changing role).
All this is done to set the stage...like the scene where the grandma hits the little girl and to console both the little ones, Jenni (who is of christian faith) tells them how her mother told her (when she was unhappy and crying) that Jesus would send his angel to wipe the tears...and that an angel would come to them and wipe their tears and will bring them happiness...and would send their sorrow far away.
When the little girl asks when the angel will come, it's SRK's entry scene.
So, for me, the importance of Aman as an ANGEL is crystal clear and I don't see the movie with your eyes, grounded in strict reality. And I guess, the movie should not be dissected the way you do as there are scenes that clearly belong to something magical that I - among others - cherish in (Hindi) movies: someone is there with you but only the audience see him/her.
