In an interview with Esquire Singapore, Ranveer Singh talked about the people around him who keep him grounded. He said that he has a close-knit circle, which includes his family and friends. He further added that Deepika is also grounded, and that her family stays away from the limelight. “They’re like, as you said, a very simple middle-class to upper middle-class family, and they’re centred and grounded people,” he shared. He further added that just like him, Deepika Padukone has also come ‘from the outside’ and doesn’t belong to a family of actors. They both went through similar struggles and experiences, and thus connected over it.

“She’s also had to work her way up in the entertainment business. She’s that classic story of packing a suitcase and coming to the big, bad city. We’ve both connected over the rejections, the humiliations, the struggle, the reliance on one’s supportive family, etc,” he said. Ranveer added that his support system of friends and family is a huge reason why he is so grounded.

Well clearly this is the man that he thinks he isn’t really well-to-do 😆, so clearly RS’ yardstick for wealth is something else.

That said, DP & her sister have indeed been brought up very middle-class with those values. It’s reflective in the way she has always conducted herself & more importantly, what her colleagues etc say about her.

Most Indian athletes, except for cricketers or otherwise wealthy, are middle class. They get government jobs on retirement from athletics.

I didn't think it was news. 😕

How do you think your work has helped you evolve over the course of the last 12 years—personally?

I really have to stop and pinch myself a lot. Like, is this really happening to me? This is straight out of a dream even now, you know? I… [pauses to think] I cry easy. I think it’s a recent phenomenon; I’ve become this person. Over the past three years, I think the pandemic had a very deep effect [on me]. Being a Cancerian perhaps, or being an empathetic person and a compassionate person [by nature], it was hard to see that kind of degree of pain and suffering in the world. I’m always on the brink of breaking down now, and I get overwhelmed by sentiments and emotions so easily.

I’ll give you an example. I’m in my car… [pauses, with visible emotion] and there’s a rickshaw driver… [pauses, eyes welling up] who is really old. He’s riding his rickshaw… and you can see the experience on his face and you can see how the world and its ways have worn him down. You can see that on his face—an old uncle. [Ranveer pauses, in tears.] He looks at me and his face lights up. It’s the most beautiful thing. Can you imagine? I’m sure his life is tough and he has all of these struggles. You can see on his face that time and experience have not been kind to him. I was watching him for a while before he turned to face me. I like to observe people—it’s a habit I have. I was just watching him and watching his face and you know, he suddenly looked towards me and his eyes lit up and he was smiling… and I’m like: Man, this is insane. It’s [insane] that I can have that kind of impact on someone’s day, on account of what? Being an artist?

So he spoke about deepikas family, he did not talk about his families income, he was saying him and dp have a close knit family. And he spoke about deepika and him connecting on struggles in the industry and rejections, ranveer has faced rejection, he was even dropped from bombay velvet.

I think that's for Mr padukone to judge and decide, what anything else thinks doesn't matter, rs loves and looks after his daughter and shows Mr padukone respect

If somebody said mahesh bhatt deserved a better son in law than rk you wouldn't have liked that, but you judge rs and his relationship with his in laws

Prakash Padukone had laurels and fame but not huge fortune like today's cricketers..he even quit his "secure" bank job to move to Denmark and wasn't really a crorepati when he retired. He was also embroiled in a fight with the system in the 90's and started a parallel badminton association with the help of fellow athletes to clean the system's rot! Today's BAI is the association he formed but after clearing the rot he was promptly thrown out! So didn't really had favours from the system. He's still just a padmasri which he got during his playing days..govt didn't even bother upgrading him.The shining fortune that he enjoys today is coz of his daughter. The wealth and goodwill the family enjoys today is because of Deepika. Else he would have been a long forgotten athlete.. how many really care about Gagan Narang today and he toh retired only recently!! So Ranveer isn't really far off when he says Padukones were upper middle class. Deepika's maternal side though is very affluent.
