Most people seem to hate because of the problematic tropes in the movie regarding Infidelity. But all that aside the movie specifically stresses and shows the repercussions of cheating. How much more does it need to be spelt out for an average audience?
This is the same argument Rick from Our Stupid Reactions made in his review .That Indian audience can't handle infedility and hence the failure of Gehraiyaan. He even brought up the failure of KANK to support his pet theory. But it's too simplistic and you are infantilizing the audience. Plenty of Indian films(Hindi as well as regional) have successfully dealt with infidelity.Gurmrah (Sunil Dutt, Ashok Kumar Mala Sinha) Ittefaq (Rajesh Khanna, Nanda) for example. Regional cinema has gone even further. But the cheating character has to be real, sympathetic and connect with the audience. An abusive/bedridden partner is one such shortcut. If in KANK Preity was the one cheating, perhaps she'd have gotten more sympathy. Gehraiyaan was a niche film which had plenty of things going wrong for it.
