Asoka (2001): Why did it flop?

I thought it was a visual treat, the performances were great, SRK and Kareena were both in top form, the music was easily one of the best soundtracks of 2001 and it dealt with a larger-than-life historical figure.

And yet it tanked big time at the box office.

Those were the days... nobody protested against the movie nor against Kareena's skin-show!

I liked the other girl the best, the one Asoka marries...

Asoka is one of the most aesthetically stunning films from BW. It really transported me to the mystical world of ancient India during the Mauryan empire. The music was so good and the overall message of the movie profound.

However, I wish they had completely eliminated the unnecessary comical side characters from the film. The film would have still flopped but IMO in retrospect would have been seen as a much more superior film.

There's still a lot to admire about the film though, and I am glad people look back at it fondly.

Ps: I found SRK so HOT as emperor Asoka 🔥🔥

There are lot of flaws in the film. I felt i am seeing some periodic drama not the great Ashok samrat movie.

They can take creative liberties but not to that extent that you mislead the people just like prudhvi Raj of akki.

I think the focus was more on the love story than the journey of Asoka… srk did a great job And I feel if they had reduced the love story angle of thr script he would have shone even more

Emperor Asoka is a popular and controversial figure in history. The tale of him conquering throne by killing his brothers and then going on a rampage killing and acquiring kingdoms and state and his subsequent transformation as a Buddhist king should have been the main highlights of film. Instead the movie focused more on the romance. Shah and Ajit had great frenemy chemistry which they didn't utilise.
