Lagaan succeeded as it became about fighting British rulers and get tax exemption. It was never about cricket primarily.

CDI became about a tainted coach trying to prove detractors wrong and win back lost respect.

No one watches pure sports films.

I do not remember Saina Nehwal biopic doing well. Nor I think Mithali Raj biopic will do well.

A film on 2011 WC will not work either as people have seen it all anyway and why will anyone watch film if they saw the real deal.

In past even JJWS flopped though it is considered a cult classic now.

Films on sports hardly strike chord with audience as no one is interested in sports. Even Dangal had to be made more about a father trying to fulfil his own broken dreams through daughter and it was not technically focused much on wrestling.

You have to add lot of emotion to make a sports film work. Film focused solely on sport itself or a real life match is like a documentary which not many want to watch.

JJWS did not flop and its far more entertaining and engaging than this borefest. 83 was made like a documentary thats why it bore people apart from these critics who like slow paced made to look real art type movies. Sports movie works if made in entertaining way like Dangal, Lagaan, CDI.

JJWS was barely an average grosser and scraped to top 10 grossers of the year at the bottom of the top 10 chart.

It gained following later on TV, DVD and online. It is indeed one of Aamir's best films and a great entertainer but it got less success in 1992 when it released because that was still era of masala films like Khuda Gawah and family dramas like Beta. And JJWS had no item songs, villains or glam heroines.

Yes sports films work only if they are more about entertainment and emotion like Lagaan, CDI. Otherwise they usually flop.

"The results are going to be very bad as the film failed to find an audience and majority of the audience that came did not really think much of the film but that is not really shocking. The shock factor is that a huge section of the industry thought this was a very good film, infact many thought it was a actually a great film. The problem lies there as you are thinking that a nothing film is a great film so when it does not perform it becomes shocking when in reality the film is not that good so the performance is actually as per the film."

Especially the last sentence. Truly this is like free flow poetry 😆

In purple is the type of shite I pulled when they made us write 2 page reflection on a topic that deserved two sentences.

To BOI the one and only thing that matters is money, specifically the money of those least able to spend it. The spitting and peeing in public male single screen audience alone decides what is good and what is bad - except, of course, if a film is doing well but they hate the actors/makers or the film itself in which case they will gleefully bash the audience buying tickets as well.

What demographic is this movie made for? Are women interested in a cricket movie about a World Cup 3 decades ago. Does the younger generation care. I personally don't feel any excitement for this movie. Dangal, Chak de all had the female empowerment angle working for them plus the Khans.Ranveer and Deepika just don't excite me.
