Yes when I used to live alone in a hostel. I frequently used to experience a phenomena called sleep paralysis. It had never happened to me before. But every night when I use to go to sleep I couldn’t move and I felt a weight over my body and ringing in my ears and sometimes whooshing sounds of the wind although the windows were closed shut. The feeling would last for quite sometime and then slowly fade away. I couldn’t sleep thanks to it and the moment I left my hostel and came back home I haven’t experienced it at all. I don’t know if it’s scientific or psychological or paranormal but the feeling is very eery and I’m glad that it’s over now.

God, I sure hope I’ve never been possessed. But I’ve witnessed so many spooky things that I could write a book on it. There’s too many stories to tell and I’m sure not everyone will be bothered to read that much. However, apart from hearing/seeing creepy shit, I’ve also suffered from sleep paralysis MANY times. Let me tell you that sleep paralysis is absolutely terrifying. At one point, I was too scared to go to sleep because I didn’t want to experience it again.

Sleep Paralysis Stories

Definition: Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move that occurs right after falling asleep or waking up. Individuals remain aware during episodes, which frequently involve terrifying hallucinations.

  • My first experience was like a horror movie. I was asleep, dreaming that I’m in a dark bedroom and all I could see was the silhouette of the devil (it had horns). The devil then pushes me and I fall back onto the bed and he places his hand over my chest, which starts to suffocate me. This is when I wake up and my whole body is paralysed, I can’t move but I’m wide awake. The pressure is still on my chest and I can’t breathe. I’m trying to cry out and move but I can’t even talk. Somehow I snap out of it and wake up. The next day I googled it and realised that this experience is common and tried to focus on the scientific explanation rather than cultural beliefs which say sleep paralysis happens because a demon is sitting on your chest (FCUK THAT).
  • Second experience happened in broad daylight. I was taking a nap and in the middle of a pleasant dream (I was running in grassland with flowers surrounding me), when I woke up and realised that I was paralysed again. This time I didn’t panic because I had google searched it. So I remained calm and tried to lift my head off the pillow. I barely lifted my head off the pillow when it was slammed back down. Then I tried to raise my arm and again it was slammed back to the same position. I looked like those possessed girls fighting a paranormal force. I could feel someone breathing into my ear and thankfully snapped out of it.
  • I’ll skip the other stories because I’ve lost count how many times I’ve had sleep paralysis, but this one scared me to death. I was sleeping on the couch, lying on my side facing the couch. I woke up in the middle of the night paralysed. I tried to will myself to wake up and was gradually trying to move my limbs when I felt a sinister presence standing behind me. You know that overwhelming feeling you get when you can sense someone is standing over you? That’s exactly how it felt but I couldn’t move my head to look behind me. Then I felt the ‘presence’ lean over and with a harsh demonic sounding voice, it started whispering creepy sounding gibberish in my ear. I even felt the breath tickling the side of my face. All I remember is internally screaming but only muffled sounds were escaping my mouth, as if I had my mouth covered with tape. I finally woke up and turned on all the lights and proceeded to watch cartoons until sunrise. 🙂

Sorry for the long read, I got carried away. Scary stories are my favourite type of conversations. When I was 5 years old, I scared my Kindergarten teacher when she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her that I wanted to be a vampire, while the other girls wanted to be a princess. 😭

I have sleep paralysis too and experienced some weird things except that devil with a horn sitting on the chest. I think I am lucky in some way. Initially, this sleep analysis scared me a lot, I am awake but the body is paralysed, Sometimes I snap otherwise my mobile alarm snaps me out of it in the mornings. So i was confident that external noise will snap me out of it.

Once I was in Wollongong in a hotel and usually, a factory siren wakes me up in the morning at 7:00 am. Sleep paralysis attacked me one morning and I was waiting and confident that the factory siren to snap me out but alas I can hear the factory siren but couldn't snap out of it. I think I fell asleep again in sleep paralysis and woke up later. But my mobile alarm never disappointed me.

But once I learnt about it I started controlling it and start dreaming good things. Trust me my brain is so active that it starts creating stories and gets good control. Sometimes the fear factor also peeps in and not able to dream anything so I try my best to snap and in a few minutes I am successful.

IT usually happens when I am short of breath but not completely and is always in the early morning hours.

This is probably the only thread where I don’t have dozens of stories 🤭 It’s just me who has managed to creep myself out at times 🤔

My encounters in the space between sleeping and waking have been quite pleasant. In fact, I was lucid dreaming once and imagined that I could fly. The next moment I was soaring like a freakin Avenger and slowly descending to earth. It was beautiful 😭

Another time, I felt the fleeting touch of someone hugging me or caressing my head, I can’t remember which one exactly. There was such a rush of love that they had towards me. I woke up groggy but smiling.

One time I had a fight with my Mum. She used to give me INR 1,000 as pocket money for college per month. This was anyway not enough to meet the expenses of going out with friends, canteen food, shopping etc, but I would make do. One day she told me she can only give me INR 500. I was livid, especially because I could see Amazon boxes every other day at home. I was stewing over it late at night, and went to the washroom. While coming back, I saw another INR 500 note, fluttering against my door. I was so flabbergasted because (A) Mom won’t surprise me with money in a million years (B) She was sleeping and there was no one else in the house. I even took a picture because I couldn’t believe my eyes! I assume she must have dropped it by mistake that day, but didn’t dare to ask because of the fear of having it taken away again 😆 Fate was kind to me though and I was quite grateful.

Another day where fate was kind to me was when I wanted to donate some stuff to Goonj. It was really hot that afternoon and i dearly wished that the weather was cooler. I am not kidding, but in front of my eyes, it became cloudy and windy. I was overjoyed! That day was something else because later, when I was on the highway back from the NGO, I realised that my Maps had been working all this while without any network. Of course, the moment I realised it, it won’t work anymore 😆

Here I go, having stories when I thought I had none 🤣 My experiences with anything unusual has always been sweet.

People with sleep paralysis - Try moving the smallest parts of your body first. For example, your finger or toe.

I don’t think I have had sleep paralysis but I am always scared of it ever happening to me. I am a paranormal fiction writer, who is shit scared of anything remotely paranormal. So when I am about to wake, I force myself to move a finger, to prevent having first hand experience of sleep paralysis 🤣

I hope my brain can remembers this finger moment when it happens next. I think the dreaming part in my post is related to lucid dreams you mentioned. I sometimes feel that I am flying and rotating in air too. Sometimes someone is spooning me and hugging me. I can feel it.

Some dreams..it's like I am living in other world and I remember in that dream world what happened previously and aware of my situation in that dream. Once I wake up that's erased very quickly from memory and can't recollect at all.

most of my dreams has varieties of toilets from gross to fancy. I really can't say if I am dreaming or in real world. So I always check if it's my house or not. But sometimes that dream beats me and signals me as my house and I end up peeing on my bed :(

I am not sure if it's a psychological issue.
