Why was this so difficult for people?

I think it may have been easier for those who know this era and the musicians and actors who had definite preferences. For eg. RK favored Mukesh, and Salilda and C.Ramchandra scarcely used Rafi. And of course, any movie starring Kishore Kumar as lead would be unlikely to have Rafi songs since KK, with a few notable exceptions, always sang for himself. But for those who are not familiar with the inner workings of musicians of that era, would not know this and wouldn’t know where to start digging. Searching for a soundtrack without Rafi would seem an impossible task. Even RK movies have 1 song by Rafi, since the MDs he worked with, Shankar Jaikishen liked to use Rafi.
