Never knew this story. Another Dev Anand-Suraiya😭 but less publicized may be because DK never spoke about it unlike DA who was very open about Suraiya. BW was much more interesting in purana zamana only. Now too much of political correctness and everyone keeping to their own. 🥱 😆

Dev-Suraiya was so heartbreaking. So was DK-Madhubala. Kamini was married to her sister’s husband after her sister died. Watch scenes from Shabnam- they had an intense on-screen chemistry!

After reading their story in depth, I have a feeling that Suraiya didn’t trust Dev enough to take a plunge. And clearly her doubt was justified looking at how he lead his life after that. He kept falling in love with every young thing that moved and even openly justified himself calling he wasn’t made to be a one man woman. But Suraiya just completely spent herself on him and literally became a recluse after she left him. Feel so sorry for her...😭

Dev certainly liked his women but I haven’t heard of him being unfaithful to his wife ever unlike RK. In fact, Zeenat Aman was the only woman he lost his head over. Apparently he was heartbroken because she went to RK for SSS.
Also, Suraiya was under her grandmother’s thumb, Dev was serious about marrying her but she didn’t want to elope with him and go against her family.

There were many factors involved there though the much publicized one was the communal angle but there was also the thing of not being able to let go of their golden egg as she was at the top of her game at that time and also there were many who were already eyeing her and Dev being the new guy, they wanted to squash him before he becomes popular marrying her. I mean too many things were going wrong between them. I was watching this episode of rendezvous with him where he spoke a lot about her. He was 80(50+ years after the saga) by then but the hurt he sustained because of this still seemed so raw.😭

In the same episode he said how small affections and attractions are a part of his job description and as long as he goes back to his home at the end of the day, all is fine!
