Regarding French culture - I am amazed that a country could celebrate Bastille day as their national holiday every year considering the gruesomeness
But French people (or maybe just Parisians) have always loved gruesomeness it seems, people being guillotined en masse on public square used to happen on a regular basis and people used to love watching it
And the use of guillotine continued well into the 20th century, up until the 1970s...
