Sponsored honeymoon?

Back to Section Stories

William Charles D'Souza

Here's some news that will make most go green. The latest development in the Ash-Abhishek files is that top European tourism boards have been scampering to get the duo to spend their honeymoon at enviable destinations in Europe. What we're wondering though is why will the couple that puts such a high premium on privacy, accept any of these offers?

Do we hear right? Abhishek Bachchan wih Aishwarya Rai

The French and Swiss tourism boards, along with the 25-country rail consortium RailEurope, have started making informal announcements through the media that they would love to sponsor the two stars' post-wedding getaway.

Switzerland Tourism is getting into the act by offering the couple a free stay at a "romantic, snow-bound" igloo suite at any one of five places in the highly popular European country, including one at Gstaad. "These cost around 600 Swiss francs per person per night (about Rs 22,500). The igloo has sleeping bags, a private outdoor sauna and jacuzzi," said Ritu Sharma, manager of Indian operations at Switzerland Tourism. Other add-ons include a private whirlpool, a sheepskin rug, hot mulled wine with baked appetisers, cheese fondue and - get this — a private, artistically designed bathroom all made of ice!

And it doesn't stop there. RailEurope would simply love to have Ash and Abhi ride in their scenic trains too. "It would be wonderful to have these two popular stars ride in our trains," said Gopi Iengar, RailEurope's area manager for South Asian countries.

The gifts in question are two first-class eight-day passes that allow the traveller to use all forms of public transportation — rail, boat and trams. Obviously these companies didn't give too much thought to why these Bollywood stars would want to hop onto a tram instead of categorically avoiding any means of transport that take them right into the line of public vision.

"We don't know them personally. That's the problem. Hence, we are making an open offer through the media," both the officials said.

I do not know why these media people after them. Ash & Abhi are human beings who love to have some privacy in their life. Now they are paying price for being famous actors. Cannot imagine, a life guarded 24 hrs by security. no freedom to move around prisionor in their home and each & every action scrutanized and reported by media.

That's a good way of advertising. Even if the couple dont agree for the offer, the tourism is making sure that people know what they can do in their countries.
