Omkara - where the villain overshadowed the hero!

Re-watched Omkara and it's a masterpiece. I love how Vishal Bharadwaj transposes Shakespeare's Othello to the badlands of U.P. and manages to not just pull it off, but to make it a work of art!

Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi is PHENOMENAL. I guess that's also an understatement as he just gets into the skin of the character in a way I have seen in very rare cases. He takes the movie to another level. It's a perfect culmination of effort and skill which goes into the character's ethos, and the nuances OMG!!! It's like he nullifies himself to get into the character's skin!!

Kareena and Ajay are also good, but what strikes me more about Omkara is how the villain overshadowed the hero. The film is great in every aspect of filmmaking and despite of having a stellar cast and brilliant performances from all the cast members, it's Saif Ali Khan who still remains as the main highlight of the film.

I love how rustic the music is also. It's absolutely authentic and atmospheric, and each song has a unique flavour. Beedi Jalaile was our favourite song in college in year 2006 to dance to, and still retains its magic.

Omkara and Dor are my favourite movies of 2006, followed by Lage Raho Mummabhai. Dhoom 2 is mega entertaining, and Rang De Basanti has achieved cult status, but Omkara is cinematic genius. It's I reiterate a masterpiece and the storytelling, cinematography, direction and acting are top-notch.

Do you guys agree/disagree?

I don't remember any movie with two main-stream stars where the "villian" hasn't overshadowed the "hero". Negative roles just have more layers to it.

weird to call Ajay's character a hero. Maybe the protagonist yes but no hero.

Yes Saif was good. It's notable that it's happened with Ajay Devgan the most. In Company it was Viviek Oberoi, in OUATIM it was Emraan Hashmi and in Omkara its Saif.

It's commendable that Ajay Devgan is fine with other characters getting better roles despite him being the bigger star.

Makes me feel Ajay Devgn gets overshadowed quite often actually, reminds me of this London Dreams review lol

But London Dreams belongs to Salman. And though this becomes a problem for Devgn in the film and he plots to ruin him, there is precious little he can do about it in the theatres. One of the characters say about Salman in the film, "He's not a better talent, he's got adaa (style)". And that kind of sums it up.

You may like London Dreams for its beautiful frames, some paisa-vasool moments between Salman and Devgn, a good background score and catchy songs. For the rest, you need willing suspension of disbelief. And large doses of it.
