Flashback: Why did year 2002 have only two hits?

If I remember correctly, 2002 was the worst year for Bollywood. There were many articles on it at that time. I believe there were only two clean hits, Raaz and Devdas, and that too the latter was made on a high budget so barely scraped through.

There were many good movies released that year like Aankhein, Kaante, Company, Saathiya which under-performed.

Why do you think the year 2002 was so bad for Bollywood?

2002 had 4 Hits, Devdas, Raaz, Saathiya and Ek Chhoti Si Love Story.

Still better than 2020 which only had one Hit with Tanhaji.

But the business of Bollywood movies really went down from 2002 to 2005 with no big Blockbusters, and even the overall business of movies in whole 2000s decade was not up to the mark.

This was because of lack of single screen audience and movies mostly depending on businesses from multiplexes, which weren't much in number at that time.
