Chhichhore to me was the best movie of 2019, not GullyBoy. Both movies are pretty good, actually, but are completely different from each other. GullyBoy was about the rise of the underdog - a trope done to death in cinematic history. Of course, GullyBoy added its own local flavour and made the story of rappers come alive. Not denying it was a good movie, just not the best.
Chhichhore to me weaves a beautiful message of how effort is more important than success or failure, and again takes the story of the underdog and gives it a different twist. What I loved most about the movie was the rich landscape of characters teeming with individuality, the writing was lush and sharp, the screenplay so engaging. The characters were alive and full of longing, each one had their backstory, and the way the film was structured was amazing.
Both movies were cinematic gems, but Chhichhore had the advantage over GullyBoy in that it blended messaging with entertainment in a very wholesome way. The message did not interfere with the entertainment quotient at all. The movie was so comforting and yet jagged in its astutely honest gaze at the harsh realities of life.
The cinematic voice in Chhichhore is unflinching yet incandescent - a lethal combination. GullyBoy is more a snapshot of a singer from a marginalised community and his rise to fame -a rags-to-riches story which taps into the popular sentiment of the masses.
Do you guys think Chhichhore is a better movie than GullyBoy, even if just slightly better?
