Why are most Bollywood comedies equivalent to cringe?

Comedies in Bollywood are mostly a combination of slapstick, toilet humour and outlandish situations, IMO. The Houseful series, for example. I found them cringe-inducing and unbearable. Coolie No. 1 and Judwaa 2 were both equally bad, and had really stale jokes.

Do you think Bollywood sucks at comedies? The last comic film which I really liked was Bhool Bhulaiya, and it released in 2007. I miss the good old Priyadarshan comedies like Hera Pheri and Malaamal Weekly.

Do you feel that most people have come to accept cringe, and that's why Bollywood is catering to the lowest common denominator? Or are they just lapping up what they are served, for lack of better alternatives?

I love all comedy movies by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Hera Pheri series by Priyadarshan. Becoz those movies were class apart and comedy scenes were natural and really good.

I avoid BW comedy movies like plague due the degradation of comedy shown in recent times.

Oh I forgot to mention Dream Girl(2019). That was a film I really enjoyed, and it was actually funny. The scenarios were hilarious!

We go to watch these comedy movies to get entertained. Most importantly, to laugh. Movies are a kind of relaxation for us. 👍🏼

The crass comedy shown now a days.. one doesn't even feel like laughing at them while watching such movies. Rather, we feel ashamed to have chosen to watch such a movie in first place. 😵

Maybe, majority people readily accept anything that is dished out in name of comedy as long as their favorites are seen on screen. 😕

That's becuase the writers haven't grown like thier audience. They still are in an era where homophobia, misogyny is funny. Like Vir said on insta handle, comedians too grow when they understand their audience, if writers understood their audience, we would have got better comedies.

To be honest, the only Indian comedy I liked was Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. 😆

I don't remember what director/writer panel it was where they talked about how Bollywood has really terrible writers. Which is absolutely true. Not only are writers not nurtured in bollywood, they are paid like shit, they have no importance when they should be treated like an essential creator of the movie. A good movie starts with good writing. No amount of acting or direction will save the movie if there is bad writing. Also writing is an important skill, requires education, requires knowledge and experience, requires talent. Not any random person can write a good script or screenplay. And that is how Bollywood looks at writers. They will let anyone write.

For comedy my favorite writers are Juhi Chaturvedi and Raj and DK. Go Goa gone and Stree were two of the best, well written comedy I have seen from Bollywood. I even laughed at A gentleman despite it's bad acting. Happy ending had so many funny moments that you don't see in hindi movies.

As for Juhi, I will never get over how I felt for Piku. October was so smart when it came to the comedy part. Vicky Donor was of course hilarious as well
