Why are they so whitewashed? I know a few people who are mates with some of the BW star kids and they say that all of them are whitewashed af. I don't get bc I have been living here for last 4 years and I can say that no one, not even white people act like white people anymore in the UK at least. Don't know about America but people in India they think they would fake their accent and would lead to validation in the West which is not true otherwise people like Hrithik etc would have been in BW than Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin, Pankaj etc

Because of most of the rich kids of Bollywood or anywhere study in IB or UK education board style schools. Many of these schools have etiquette classes and body language improvement modules. In my school there was a extreme focus of body language and presentation. Most of them travel to abroad regularly or meet foreigners. Some even join finishing schools. Many of them copy their parents body language.

The old money in India is very much has British etiquette and manners. The new money always tries to copy them. They are copied by Bollywood.

When I started my first job, we were trained in both British and American etiquette. There is loads of difference between both of them. The British are considered more posh.

All wealthy, urban communities in India are generally more “westernised” in speech, mannerisms and lifestyle as compared to poorer or more rural counterparts...

I wouldn’t call them whitewashed though, as they do celebrate desi festivals, wear desi clothes, speak Hindi, etc 🤷🏽‍♀️

What do you mean by whitewashed? Looks? Language? Attitudes?

I don't think it's just in Bollywood. In many countries among the rich elites they work very hard to be westernized and "posh". The older the money gets the more westernized they become. It's interesting to see how Bollywood changed with each generation of star kids. Starting from Rishi's Kapoor's generation to the current and future ones who don't know how to speak Hindi.

True.

Most of the elites world expect British manners from people around them. Rudeness and casual behavior is generally frowned upon. Politeness is expected even if someone is behaving rude with you.

It's a way of showing they are from the upper class. If you have lighter skin, it means you don't get tanned from working blue-collar jobs in the sun. Laborers have darker skin because of tanning since they don't have comfortable office jobs indoors.

Same goes for accents and behavior. If you speak English primarily, it's a way to show that you went to more elite schools and feel comfortable enough to speak English even in your everyday life. It also means you can probably afford foreign vacations and can easily mix with Western people.

Ultimately, it's about showing how rich and posh and above others you are. That's why Indians fake their accents so much.

I really don't understand the concept of a fake accent under these circumstances.

Madonna when married to Guy Ritchie suddenly speaking English with a British accent instead of an American at age 42 is fake.

Someone learning English from a teacher, parent or environment with an American or British accent - developing an American or British accent is not fake.

When I was taught French I was not taught how to speak it with an American accent. That I did anyway didn't make me more genuine than someone who had mastered the accent.
