Just came across an old post of mine which I had made on Bollywood in 2014. Copy-pasting it here for the sake of nostalgia:

In 2014, we are in a new phase of Bollywood – perhaps the most interesting one since 2006 when the ‘new’ kinda movie started being made. This means we still have the formula-ridden, stale, and inane stuff on one hand and on the other we have a new generation of stars trying to break the formula and steer clear of the tried-and-tested path.

This divide has almost come to its peak in 2014, where Akshay Kumar-Shah Rukh Khan-Salman Khan -and Hrithik Roshan continue to act and endorse the 100-crore-no-brainer film and on the other hand, we have young stars like Shahid, Deepika,Alia, Varun, Parineeti, Arjun Kapoor, Siddharth, and Kangana valiantly charting out a trajectory in the new and untested with a determination which is young, feckless, and yet carefully marketed.

It of course helps to be supported by directors like Vikramaditya Motwani, Vikas Bahl, Dibakar Banerjee, Vishal bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Shoojit Sirkar, and so on - but that’s another story!

Some of the movies in 2014 which were young, trendy, and yet path-breaking in different ways!

1. Queen – Kangana Ranaut

queen-hindi-movie-2014-photos-9

One of the best movies of 2014, unarguably, it raked in both the moolah and good reviews across the board. It was a gentle, good-humoured and sweet-tempered movie, which however did make some important points about liberal humanism, gender, and relationships.

2. Haidar – Shahid Kapoor

After a decade of song-and-dance , Shahid wanted to experiment with ‘real’ cinema. The results are there for everyone to see. The movie has garnered rave reviews and Shahid’s acting has been elevated even as we sit captivated by poetry on canvas.

3. Highway – Alia Bhatt

What acting – what cinema! Clutches of pure brilliance by a 21-year-old , one of the youngest actresses in Bollywood. Stockholm Syndrome, and a child with a split personality – if only Imtiaz Ali had incorporated some realism to make it more believable.

4. Finding Fanny – Deepika and Arjun

A quirky, niche movie with loads of black humour, and some standout performances. Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor fit in like fish to water. At times, you are left wondering whether there really is a noir element to the film, and how could two such young stars not get intimidated by the presence of luminous talents like Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, and Dimple Kapadia.

5. Hasee to Phasee – Parineeti Chopra and Siddharth Malhotra

Sidharth-Malhotra-and-Parineeti-Chopra-Picture-Hasee-Toh-Phasee-Pic-1

Hasee to Phasee is an avante-garde movie, not much talked about, but with a quiet, refined sensibility and sparkling performances. Parineeti Chopra is exquisitely talented and makes no bones to hide her talent beneath layers of pretensions.

This is upfront entertainment, and Siddharth Malhotra also unravels slowly but surely, showing he has more to prove and is not just eye-candy. If only film-makers could tap into this side to him more.

Yeah that's true.

I was just thinking things have changed drastically since then!

I was actually praising Alia🤣

At that time, I didn't know that Alia would become the poster-girl of nepotism. I really thought she would chart a different path for herself and do some memorable movies and rise to the top organically. Little did I know🥺

2014 was indeed the beginning of a paradigm shift in Bollywood.

The lines between content-driven cinema and big commercial films started to get a little blur.👍🏼 e.g Haider, Mardani, Mary Kom etc.

Though some bad films were still minting money at the BO, but the audiences finally (& thankfully) started to reject mindless, formulaic "masala" films like Action Jackson, Boss etc that came into prominence during 2010-2013 (owing to the success of Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore etc) Bad comedies like Humshakals and Entertainment also failed.

Among actors, younger lot of actors like Alia, Varun, Shraddha etc started to come into forefront with films like Highway, 2 States, Ek Villian, Humpty etc.
Kangana-Deepika started to peak after the success of Ramleela, Krrish 3, YJHD in 2013.

Akshay started to balance masala flicks with socially relevant films.
Ranbir & Vidya''s downfall started with several flops in succeeding years, but their loyal fan-following still supported them.

Apart from films, 2014 was also the year when "Digital Content" became a household name.
YouTube Channels like TVF, AIB started to peak.
The culture of "Youtubers" came into prominence.
And towards the end of the year, with TVF coming up with Permanent Roommates, Hindi webseries started to become a thing, and they've grown by leaps and bounds since then.👏

Agreed.

I haven't watched Finding Fanny yet. So, can't comment about it.

But, Queen, I love this movie so much. How a young girl understands her worth and brings a change in herself and how she meets different people. Just loved it. ❤️

Haider -Shakespeare trilogy 's movie on tragedy and best actors for the roles, be it Shahid, Tabu, Kay Kay, Irrfan, Shraddha, everyone.

Hasee To Phasi - The movie was good and Parineeti's character was so interesting. Loved the movie.

Highway again - Randeep and Alia and how the issue is addressed, wonderful.

I want to add one more movie in this list from my side (my opinion)

Citylights - What a good movie and portrays city hardships in a realistic way. RKR's one of the best as lead actor.

Mary Kom

Never thought as 2014 as a good year... very few good films IMO.

If you had to pick just one Bollywood movie as your all-time favorite, which one would it be? And what makes it so special for you?
