...Just a contrarian point of view. I know most people feel Imtiaz let down the cast of his movie by making a trashy film. And no doubt it was the worst film of his career.
As a fan of Imtiaz’s storytelling, it is disappointing to watch him make such a confused film that almost enters the tacky territory. But I realized that the worst part was the performances, even more than the half-baked storyline.
Imtiaz's films rely heavily on performances. LAK2 was no exception. But unlike his earlier films, where the performances were pretty good and sometimes even excellent, the performances in LAK2 were sub- par ( apart from Randeep Hooda). In fact, they became the grist for trolling and memes.
Tamasha’s Ved or Rockstar’s Janardhan - Imtiaz’s characters have always been flawed. That was still a collaboration, where both the actor and director, were in good form.
Unfortunately, here neither Kartik nor Sara manage to pull it off. While Sara struggles to keep her expressions (and hands) under check, Kartik fails to gain the audiences’ empathy for him.
And when you don’t connect with the protagonists, everything else in the movie begins to feel like an exercise in futility. The story became even more insufferable because of the bad acting.
I am just trying to imagine someone like Ranbir who could have pulled off Kartik's character with ease. In fact, Kartik looks like he is suffering from a developmental disorder. I don't think that was the intention of the director.
Do you think the casting of the movie was the main problem, and better actors could have saved the day?
Discuss.
