Just watched Thappad, it's a powerful and empowering film which weaves the story of a solitary slap into a larger exploration of male entitlement, and dissects the flaws of a patriarchal society without being preachy or condescending. The movie is flawlessly stitched together, using various examples of micro-narrations all of which highlight the injustices women have to live with on a day-to-day basis, and how the perpetrators of such injustices often are unaware of the double standards which their acts are a reflection of. The movie holds a mirror to society and is subtle, layered, and nuanced. At no point you will feel that the narrative is biased or pro-propaganda. It communicates its point in a simple and delicate manner, and Taapsee Pannu is at her career-best in portraying a woman who rises out of a deep slumber which a single slap, which forces her to come face to face with the unfair nature of her existence.
As a society, I don't think we are ready for a film like Thappad. The movie hall was only half-full on a Saturday, and some felt Taapsee's character was taking it too far. Also, the sensitive nature of the film was lost on many, who felt the movie is too slow or not gripping enough.
I loved the film, and it's definitely one of the best films cinematically. An eye-opener for sure. Would recommend it highly.
