Just watched Thappad, it's a powerful and empowering film which weaves the story of a solitary slap into a larger exploration of male entitlement, and dissects the flaws of a patriarchal society without being preachy or condescending. The movie is flawlessly stitched together, using various examples of micro-narrations all of which highlight the injustices women have to live with on a day-to-day basis, and how the perpetrators of such injustices often are unaware of the double standards which their acts are a reflection of. The movie holds a mirror to society and is subtle, layered, and nuanced. At no point you will feel that the narrative is biased or pro-propaganda. It communicates its point in a simple and delicate manner, and Taapsee Pannu is at her career-best in portraying a woman who rises out of a deep slumber which a single slap, which forces her to come face to face with the unfair nature of her existence.

As a society, I don't think we are ready for a film like Thappad. The movie hall was only half-full on a Saturday, and some felt Taapsee's character was taking it too far. Also, the sensitive nature of the film was lost on many, who felt the movie is too slow or not gripping enough.

I loved the film, and it's definitely one of the best films cinematically. An eye-opener for sure. Would recommend it highly.

Minty ko pasand aayi matlab mujhe shayad hi ayegi.😆 You were praising Chappak left and right and were raving about SMZS, I liked neither. While Chappak was really slow and I didn't like the narration at all, SMZS disappointed me more may be because I have huge expectations from Ayushmaan.

Now I'm almost sure that Thappad's gonna be a disappointment as well. I think you have the ability see something which is not there in a movie like you did with the both I mentioned or I'm selectively blind. Anyhow, I don't like Taapsee, not going to watch it. Koi aur actress hoti, may be DP or Kangana or may be Yami or Kareena, definitely would have watched it.

I only liked Deepika's performance in Chapaak. I had not liked the movie per se. I did like SMZS, though.

But Thappad is a notch above these.

If film and audience don’t get along then it’s audiences fault ???? Film couldn’t be bad at all ?

Thappad is not at all "bad" cinema. Anyway, bad for you may not be bad for me. It all depends on the viewer's perspective, and rarely is there a homogeneous view.

I don't know what "relevant" cinema is. Panga was a great film, but it didn't work at the box office. Chappaak was decent too. I haven't watched Thappad but it looks good.

These movies shouldn't be judged solely on box office appeal. Whilst cinema is business, it's up to the audience to watch whatever they wish to watch. They don't owe it to filmmakers or society to watch movies like Panga or Thappad.

People need to understand this. So do filmmakers. Movies like Panga and Thappad are for niche audiences. It's all about how good the craft and narrative is. Looks like Thappad has succeeded there.

Why should I spend money on a movie where it is bashing my gender? Let women make this movie superhit because they are getting to hear what they want.

I’ll watch Kabir Singh on Netflix

i don't know if you've actually seen Panga, but it's not for niche audiences at all. It's a bright, sunshiny, happy film with enough emotion, catchy songs and rise of the underdog trope -- all things associated with a mainstream film.
