‘Dabangg 3’ film review: Salman Khan movie formulaic and repetitive

Salman Khan, however, dominates every frame of the third instalment of the franchise

The ‘Dabang’ series are getting progressively worse, but Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s appeal and charm in a snug cop uniform remains undiminished.

The age-defying actor, who plays the cheeky police officer Chulbul Pandey, dominates every frame in the third instalment of the ‘Dabangg’ franchise. He tries valiantly to heave life into a tired action-adventure template that relies on his skills and charisma alone.

The usual tropes like Khan being the irreverent-but-honourable police officer Chulbul Pandey trying to save his women and the day, a morally bankrupt villain, a couple of hapless damsels and half-a-dozen songs are all intact. He’s a modern superhero without the cape or spandex, but is a sweet saviour armed with enough bombastic one-liners to make your ears bleed.

There’s nothing new or inspiring in ‘Dabangg 3’ and the degree to which you will enjoy this film depends largely on your devotion towards Khan.

If you adore him blindly, then you may feel on top of the world after watching this bloated film. If not, you may find it hard to endure this traumatic, masala-fuelled action adventure.

‘Dabangg 3’ is a prequel of sorts and takes you back in time about how the larger-than-life cop Chulbul Pandey came to be.

His grand love affair with a woman Khushi, a forgettable debut by Saiee Manjrekar, forms the backbone of the third instalment. But that strand of a story hasn’t got much heft to keep us engaged. How long can you marvel at Khan’s effortless histrionics? The women in the ‘Dabangg’ series are eerily similar. They expect Chulbul Pandey to be their saviour and don’t have much agency of their own.

The number of times you see women from ‘Dabangg’ being hung by toxic villains will make your head spin. At one point, even Salman Khan’s character observes about his enemies targeting his wives consistently. Come up with something new, he snarls at the villain. Our sentiment exactly as we sat through the 150 minutes-long drama. ‘Dabbing 3’ will remind you of an archaic ‘80s Bollywood potboiler.

Actor Arbaaz Khan, who plays Chulbul Pandey’s stepbrother, is serviceable in his part. South Indian actor Sudeep manages to hold his own as this lethal villain who has a mass grave in his backyard. His paths cross with Chulbul Pandey when he sets his eyes on Chulbul’s lover Khushi (Manjrekar). He doesn’t take to rejection well and his way of gaining closure is barbaric and violent. His character is pure evil and there are no layers to make his putrid behaviour palatable.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha, as Chulbul Pandey’s loving wife, is a convincing presence. Compared to Saiee Manjrekar, Sinha leaves a better impression. Her catty courtship with him is suitably engaging. But what lets ‘Dabangg 3’ down is a familiar story and a narrative fractured by multiple songs.

Bite this bullet only if you are fanatical about Khan and he can do no wrong in your eyes. For those who don’t wear those starry blinkers, sit this one out.

Salman Khan’s most awaited movie of this year Dabangg 3 is at the cinema halls. It is the third installment of the Dabangg franchise. This is Salman Khan’s second movie in 2019. In June, Bharat has released which did excellent business at the box office. From Dabangg 3, Salman Khan is back with his witty one-liners and punches and it is a treat for Salman Khan fans. The trailer received an overwhelming response from the audiences.

Dabangg 3 will take you to the journey of Chulbul becoming Dabangg cop. Dabangg 3 is basically a prequel in the parts which will tell you the story of young Chulbul. There he met Khushi played by debutant Saiee Manjrekar. Chulbul fell in love with Saiee. At the same time, the antagonist of the movie Bali played by Kichha Sudeep also falls for her. Bali Singh kills the entire family of Khushi. At present, Bali Singh is back in Chulbul’s life. How Chulbul will take revenge from him? Watch out the movie for it.

Dabangg 3 is a typical Salman Khan movie that has high-octane drama, action scenes, and larger than life scenes. The action scenes are stretched and most of them are in slow motion. Salman Khan gives you many clapping moments. Saiee Manjrekar looked impressive in her debut. Kiccha Sudeep as an antagonist did a fantastic job. The story is predictable and the length of the movie is quite long. Director Prabhudeva has a second collaboration with Salman Khan after Wanted. The music is good and Warina Hussain did an item number in the movie. Overall, Dabangg 3 is the masala entertainer and is a treat for all Salman Khan fans. If you are a die-hard fan of Salman Khan then you should not miss this one. We give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5.

Just saw the movie .This one works in patches .it is deffo an improvement over the unbearable 2nd part but falls way short of first part .The plot is so routine that you see everything from a distance .The story feels ancient,outdated and jaded .The only saving grace here is the flashback portion that works to some extent ....a film that vanishes from your memory the moment you leave the auditorium ..

Dabanng 3 picked up on Thursday to get to an advance of 11.50 crore bet with the final day giving it a big push as the advance looked like going nowhere considering where it stood on Wednesday night. The full advance plans of the film also opened on Wednesday evening but the slow response till Thursday was not only plans opening late.;

There has been many issues with this Citizenship Bill which has led to protests and violence in many cities and this cause security issues which is not good as it reduces the audience and even even if a big film gets affected by 10% it takes a big chunk of its collections. Here the affect can be much more than 10%. Also the film and the songs had a certain South feel which was not there in the first two films of the franchise which meant that the film was not as hot as a big film should be in places like Delhi city, East Punjab and Kolkata. Still the film has managed to get the fourth best advance of the year but is the lowest for a Salman Khan starrer since a long time though most because of a late start and a major external factor. It remains to be seen how the film opens on the first day but wit violence erupting in many cities across India it is sure to hit unless things go back to normal. Dabangg 3 Has Good Start

Dabanng 3 had a good start of around 30-35% but this will mean the first day collections will not be like what was expected from the film. It will be not be near challenging the non holiday numbers of films like Sanju and Tiger Zinda Hai but as long as these issues with the Citizenship Bill dont hurt it too much over the day it will still come out with a good first day number.

Despite the problems it is still probably the second best non holiday opening of the year after Saaho (Hindi). This sort of start for most other films would be very good or even excellent but the expectations from this are huge due to the franchise value of the film and as Chulbul Pandey is probably the most popular film character this decade.

The film has low occupancy in many key theaters of Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad due to these cities having huge problems with protests and violence. There are cinemas in UP recording 5-10% occupancy while others record 70-80% and its all dependent on what the situation is in a particular city.

The film would have comfortably gone over the 30 crore nett mark if everything was normal and now its difficult to know where the first day will go as performance will depend a lot on the prevailing situation in that particular center. As the opening is not huge the film will become very dependent on the word of mouth and even then the hope will be that the protesting and violence eases which will allow the film to collect better.
