If '8 mile' is the quintessential rap struggle movie, then how come 'Straight Outta Compton' was a big hit? Considering that 'A Star is Born' has been remade so many times why was it such an Oscar darling?
A majority of the books and movies follow the 'heroes journey' narrative template. Having a similar narrative template does not make any movie less or more worthy. What makes movies good is how you adapt that narrative template to give it a flavor and spin of its own.
Gully Boy is very different from '8 mile' in the fact that it is quintessentially Bombay. It is one of the few movies that has a very raw and real representation of Dharavi without glossing it too much. It isn't a bad pick.
That being said it isn't a perfect pick either. I have not seen Article 15, but based on trailer and reviews - it is a much harder hitting film. It tackles an issue that is very unique to India. The rural backdrop represents a huge slice of Indian society. I think it would have been a better pick not just for its content, but its social relevance and representation of India. But I feel the social relevance and representation is exactly why it was not picked. India does not want the world shedding light on its caste politics that are going strong even in 2019.
