Bcz the normal version of any story is established as one from male perspective. That's why a coming of age story is mainly of a boy, a buddy road trip film is mainly about guy friendships. That's why all male superheroes charging together seem normal, all female superheroes doing so feel like pandering. Women r more accustomed to adjusting to the male version of any story, alas vice versa doesn't happen. I was having a conversation with a guy who was like well obviously people would relate to a hero of their gender more,n I said but we girls have cheered on male main leads for eons. I rooted for Harry even though he was a guy, I rooted for Tarzan in Tarzan,I rooted for Sherlock Holmes to solve the case,I rooted for the znmd guys.

Women oriented movies tend to carter to women only, hence most men don't enjoy them. Just like majority of women don't enjoy the male oriented movies, unless they are romantic movies.

Plus women movies haven't yet found that appeal which will be universal, and even when the theme is universal like Manikarnika, you have a gutter chap like Kangana ruining it with her BS.

I didnt watched it but i would definitely give same credit for actresses. Actors single handedly cant do anything it's two way process unless it's mindless masala like sallu's one where mass audience bhai bhai karte hue reaches theatre.

why is it that people prefer to spend money more on male centric movies and less on female centric?. That's the question, she says its the audience fault ( our fault) for not going to the theaters to watch female centric movies , at least most of them but male stars irrespective of content get a big opening only for the star name associated with the project.

It's deep rooted patriarchy. Men are thought to be the superior sex... I am appalled but it's the truth.

Oh gosh. Such a mess.

@tina59

Also, female centric films are serious in nature, primarily (except for Veere Di Wedding which was in a fun space). Therefore, most people refrain from them.

Moreover, actors are hailed as heroes and people want to see them do things that can be celebrated. Again, the expections from women are that they must nurture a family and stay at home... That's what I've seen around me.

Most men don't value women. Not just in India but all over the world though the problem is greater in India. They think women are just there to cater to their needs as either a mom, wife, sister or daughter. They are treated as appendages and that reflects in movies too. Men play the real leads and women are there to do the supporting roles that cater to the lead male.

The only time they get lead roles is if it's for specialized women-centric subjects like rape, abuse, or in-law problems. Nowadays opportunist men like Akshay are even taking over possible female-centric movies related to periods and hygiene issues with toilets in villages. There was a chance to do a non-dukhi aurat type of movie with the Mangal mission but Akshay was there as usual to snatch that too.

If you made generic mass masala trash with women in leads, it would probably work just as it does with the male actors. Put Kareena in a stupid comedy or Deepika in an action movie fighting terrorists and people would watch it. Maybe it won't happen quickly but the audience would build over the years if they kept at it. But nobody is interested in trying.

nope. smart audience knows which content to see or which to reject from the trailer itself. no one misses a movie bcoz of male female thingy. one look at the poster or song ppl form their opinion. for example ppl knew zero bharat thugs aren't worth their time. ppl want to see different every time. not that zebra stripes type repetitive pattern in every second movie. hence the rejection.

I think it’s partly the audience’s fault for having set views about women and women’s roles in films. I disagree with her when she says the problem isn’t also in the film world. Films and film makers keep playing to the same old stereotypes and expectations. Even just calling a film “female-centric” is part of the problem. Are the other films “male-centric” and only made for the male audience? A film is good, bad, or mediocre whether the biggest part is played by a male or female.

I agree with Kangana (gasp!) that entertaining money making films can be made starring women as the hero or doing action or whatever else. I want her to be quiet or go away so I was torn about Manikarnika. Part of me would have liked to have seen a female actress make a great movie about a national hero and have the audience embrace it. But it’s Kangana so of course she stole the Manikarnika project from Ketan Mehta, semi-stole film from Krish, meddled in every aspect of film so much her producer had a hypertensive stroke, trashed the final product, and reinforced the negative stereotype instead.

I think I remember Ekta Kapoor once saying

"In Bollywood, men are idolized and women are fantasized/itemized. On television, women are idolized"

I agree. It's because of the demographic of film watchers. It's not just a Bollywood problem. Male oriented films in general around the world make more profit.

When you talk about great actors, the first few names that people take are Leonardo Di'Caprio, Tom Hanks, Robery De Niro., etc. Then you think of females. That's how the world works unfortunately. Most countries are run and ruled by men STILL.
