Confirming how he was very much approached for Padmaavat, Vicky recalls, "We were in talks, but then certain things fall in place, certain things don't fall in place. For me, you need to try and understand, my first film came out in 2015, a small, humble film like Masaan. And if because of that one film, a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali calls you to his office and tells you that you are a contender for a part in his next, that in itself means a huge deal for me. There I have got the film, I have lived the character, I got everything with that one call. This is not the end of the world. We'll keep working. He (SLB) will keep making films, I will inshallah keep being a part of films and we will probably cross paths again. So these are all just a part and parcel of the industry that you are in. I absolutely have no regrets. In fact, I feel lucky that I got a call, he even thought of me. He is a director where actors are lined up to just be a part of his films. But out of everyone, the fact he just thought of me in itself is a big deal for me. I feel fortunate that such doors too are opening for me."
Ask Vicky about the role he was offered and he adds, "It was for the Ratan Singh part(played by Shahid Kapoor). But like I said, this is the case with every next film - there are many actors in the running, then they consider other things to fit the role and finally it just falls into one person's kitty. That's how it goes. But I loved Padmaavat." Hopefully, we'll get to see Vicky and Sanjay Leela Bhansali collaborate for a film soon. Your thoughts?

Umm.. Isn't DP now acting in a movie after a long time (and hence has a lot riding on it) with a newcomer? Vikram Massey or something?
Premise of this post sounds like gossip to me

Because she is a huge star, his close friend kinda like his daughter and obviously his go to girl for a long time.
Obviously we listen to people who we know better.
For example if say someone from the forum enters some online competition, and asks us to vote for her/him.
Most of us will vote without looking at others and trying to settle for who is a better talent.
That is how humans work.

SLB letting dp choose in casting : May be that was deepika's consolation prize for doing a flower pot role which had nothing to offer her 😆
Aditya Dhar was supposed to make a film with that pakistani but it didn't work out. That's how URI came about. It's a story on its own. Haha.Deepika, I guess wouldn't have minded having Ranveer in a double role, playing Khilji and Ratan.
Except for the Jauhar sequence which was supposed to show Rani Padmaavati as the epitome of strength.

She was most probably given option of choosing Shahid or a Vicky.
And Vicky wasn't a big deal during that time.
Regular public didn't know him.
Shahid although not really a big commercial star, still is a popular name and people do know him.
While it is obviously unfair, but that is how business work, talent takes backseat when it comes to marketing, hence Vidyut who is more capable of playing Tiger in TZH, will never play Tiger but an old Salman who doesn't even do his stunts.
Padmavat is a blockbuster, could have been HGOTY had it not been banned in some states, so the gamble paid off for Deepika and SLB.
They will see it as a good decision, they don't cares whether critics or online cinephiles found her and Shahid's acting lackluster.
