Girlfriend isn't quite the mainstream Bollywood movie. It's more of a B grade movie with thriller elements if I can say so.

ELKDTAL focuses solely on the lead character's homosexuality and how she gets out of the closet to her family.
It's a Mainstream Bollywood movie because it stars a A grade cast between the A lister Sonam Kapoor who is also an award winner, Award winning actor Rajkummar Rao who has established himself as a versatile and talented actor, Yesteryear superstar Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla and it also stars an A list South Indian star Regina Cassandra.

Sorry to say but just because it stars sonam who is the only one relevant out of all the others as a mainstream actor because she has probably never done any artsy movie, doesn't make this movie mainstream. It's a washout on BO with many in the audience not even realising when it got released. So yeah no more mainstream than fire or girlfriend was.

When girlfriend released it had Isha koppikar and amrita arora as leads and they were not b grade back then. It was much talked about and maybe even censored? I don't remember but I do remember that it was not b grade back then. Just because sonam has made yet another mistake while glorifying herself and her movie, doesn't mean it needs to be justified beyond reason. She clearly said this was the first Bollywood movie on lesbianism, and that's a big lie.

Atleast Sonam had the guts to play a lesbian character in a film.. those here arguing about ELKDTAL not being the first well your fav's won't even dream to play such a role, kudos to Sonam and Anil for the film.

there's nothing to kudos her about looking at her extraordinary acting😆. It was her who choose this film bcoz she knew that if the film didn't work then her long talks about pseudo feminism would work but people are not fool😆

Girlfriend was more about obsessive love n it was somewhat shown as bad... In ELK was promoted as a lesbian lovestory n complete movie was about a girl coming out n it's the first of its kind n I'm proud of my baby<3
I live kapoors... The cousins are soo similar to mine own like the way we interact in sns... The seem like close bond not the occasional party tyoes

Isha and Amrita never were A listers...

Mainstream movies can be defined as moviesthat cost much to make and are created for profit. To pay the cost and make the profit they are made so very many people will want to pay to see them. They have a wide release to first run theaters. Those are movie theatersthat run mostly new mainstream movies from the major movie companies. After their time in first-run theaters, mainstream movies are sold at popular stores. Hollywood and Bollywood movies are usually considered mainstream, and may also be blockbusters. The boundary is vague. An example of the opposite of mainstream movie is art films.

ELKDTAL might not have been expected to earn much money in India BUT it had quite a wide release compared to art movies and it was shown worldwide in UK, US, NZ, AUS, CAN... it's also expected to release on a digital plateform to have a wider reach (and I'm sure to get more profit for its producer)
Producer who produced Blockbuster movies...

Loved the article
I like Sonam's take on inheriting values too.

She is also one who truly did what she wanted to without caring about image, box office success or was in the rat race to score brownie points from Big shots in Bollywood.

she carved her own path and walked in it with her head held high.

Like that about her.

In your definition itself is said that many people want to watch it and it should earn profits, make money. Sonam herself is saying in your post that they didn't expect the movie to have commercial business . Negates your whole point. Besides sonam didn't say it was the first mainstream movie, she said it was the first Bollywood movie on this subject. There was another movie, I don't remember its name, but the guy who played Sri Devi's husband in English vinglish started in it. It was again a small budget movie but it had lesbian females in it. So, her point is wrong. It may be the first movie where she is playing a lesbian, but since nobody bothered to watch it, we can't say that her film was revolutionary. It's just like those movies where either they are watched online or get critical acclaim. And there have been multiple of those.

It's a good thing that a movie with known people got made on this subject, with the treatment I've heard it got, and I'm happy that sonam played this part. I don't appreciate her acting very much but I like her choice of movies. What I don't like is the patting on her own shoulder and trying to make big claims about how she has created history with her movies. If this is the reason why she's choosing different subjects, then that is very pretentious of her .

They might haven't expected much of the Indian market but I think they did intend to earn profit from overseas -which was in fact the case.

Kapoors are a "blow your own trumpet" kind of people but they are close. Even the extended family. I like it about them. The camaraderie looks genuine, not forced like the other kapoors
I like what she said about her parents.
