The Namesake
Murder on the Orient Express- Agatha Christie
The Godfather
Shatranj ke Khiladi by Premchand adapted by Satyajit Ray
Haider from Hamlet
Saheb Biwi aur Ghulam- have not read the novel but the movie itself felt like an epic novel about Bangla zamindari era

Clueless. Its a modern day adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. It is a clever, sassy, satire on teenage life in Beverly Hills. Alicia Silverstone is spot on as Cher Horowitz, the valley girl version of Emma. Prior to Mean Girls this was the best teenage movie in my books. It has since been bumped by Mean Girls and Easy A.

Vishal Bharadwaj's Shakespeare trilogy is also good.

Literal adaptations tend to lose the essence of the book. I tend to enjoy reinterpretations in different eras and contexts.

I like either literal adaptation of a literary classic or reinterpretation in different setting

(Loved Clueless, Best teen movie - one of the best movies imo - Meangirls was okay but something was missing...)

I really dislike when a movie is amalgam of both and ruin a classic

For ex the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice was set in early 19th century England just like the novel but the characters particularly the sisters behaved and talked like modern girls which ruined it for me

Same here, I like either literal adaptation or a modern reinterpretation like Clueless

I was also going to put Pride and Prejudice which is my most favorite romantic novel ever but then I remembered I hated the recent movie version. Keira Knightley was terrible as Liz Bennett
The BBC adaptation was very good though, loved their Liz and Darcy ...Colin Firth as Darcy was too good ❤️

I should watch the BBC version

If you can stand B&W, Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier starrer 1940 version is really good

Another great adaptation - Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet

I loved both the book and the movie (Nastasja Kinski was titular role)

Haven't watched the movie yet. Putting it in my "To watch" list. 😃

Yeah S & S movie adaptation was quite good, Kate and Emma T acted well
I love Jane Austen novels
But Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma was rather annoying, never liked that actress, Sonam in Aisha was better as modern version of Emma

I actually love classics. Mill on the Floss remians one of my favorite classics till date. And Emma too. I really wish there was a good movie made on MOTF! Someday... Sigh!

Really? There's a movie adaptation of Emma? And I didn't know it yet? Fie on thee, Purple! 😆
Yeah, I can understand where you come from. In my head, I actually paint a picture and make my own movie when I read a book. And of course, nothing can ever be good enough after that. 😆
No but seriously, subtle linkings and undertones are a delight to watch and that is one of the reasons I loved Omkara😳
