Now he's brilliant but even if someone else say Rajkumar was playing his roles it would still be a hit because the story is that compelling, that engaging. Similarly Stree would be hit too without Shradhha or Raj cause that was a good story.

and how do you know if a movie would work without stars?
Would padmavat work without stars? What about sanju?

A good script may not need stars ... but it most definitely needs "good actors" .. without them even good script will fail for not having proper execution! ... Andhadhun itself is a great piece of writing .. as per KWK it was offered to Harsh (Sonam's bro) ... if it were him, I doubt it would have created the same impact as did Ayushman with his screen presence and acting!

it is intertwined though and not as simple as you are saying.
For example, if Stree had any other actress say Kriti Sanon or Kiara, it won't have gotten this much hype before release.

Andhadhun had Ayushmann whose pulling power in Delhi NCR area is under estimated.

Obviously he isnt a huge star, but he has enough good will to ensure movies to safety.

Given most of his hits have been sleeper from Vicky Donor to DLKH to SMS.

Plus Dangal or say TZP would have never been such huge hit and ATBB without Aamir.

Exactly what it says. Movies that focus on content. They are driven by a good script, good story and good performances. They are not trying to mask their ugly, dumb, brain numbing plots with big stars and flashy songs. Doesn't mean it can't have big stars or flashy songs, but that is not the most important thing for the movie.
After last years terrible terrible movies, this year was a blessing.

I think content movies are basically movies success is due to the script and it's engaging screenplay more than the starpower. Basically these movies are small budgeted cos it has no stars or other gimmicks.

I think some people are missing the point. I don't know why we are talking about why a movie worked in the box office or why people went to see it. What people refer to as content movie these days is very simple. It is a movie where the majority of the focus is on the main story of the film, which is usually very well written. Whether it works in the box office or why people go to see it won't change whether it is a content movie or not. For example, Death in the gunj. An amazing movie that would fall under content movie. Vikrant Massey is in it, didn't make much money. But an exceptional movie nonetheless that is respected for the script, the story and acting.

Ofcourse stars bring in their big fanbase and make stuff bigger hits. But essentially a good script would be a hit these days. Not blockbuster level obviously but still successful. TZP , Dangal would have found takers even without Aamir in it. But certainly not blockbuster level. The openings wouldn't be great and all but I believe a good script can sustain regardless. But obviously like another person said talented actors are a must for content driven cinema.

I don't get this. A film could be a very high concept idea but it didn't translate to screenplay or film for whatever reasons. Is it a content film? Does a content film have to necessarily be good? Can there be a bad content film?

It should always be stardom + entertaining content. Only content has its limitation. It might become success but not at the level when there is a star in it.
Imgaine Irfan Khan in Bhajrangi bhaijaan or Dangal, he would have pulled off the roles but at max it would have done 120 to 140 cr compared to being All time blockbusters. Never would have gotten solo eid or christmas, and a wide release.

Good content is when audience while watching a film evokes certain emotions is closer to director's expectation. if people don't laugh or get excited about fight sequences in a Rohit Shetty's film then the film isn't good
