& now for the performances. #SaifAliKhan as Shakun Kothari - he doesn't have dreams, he has goals. The gujju ghee loving' guy you will love to hate. You will also love him because he's shown as an ass who spreads sass wherever he goes. Saif is Splendid. #Baazaar @EmmayEntertain

.gauravvkchawla's #Baazaar is a solid commercially engaging game of vice versus virtue, of #SaifAliKhan versus rohanvmehra - It's so identifiable with ethics, white collar crime, the tricks of the trade & the moral bankruptcy behind today's money society. EmmayEntertain

BAAZAAR MOVIE REVIEW

 • TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Oct 25, 2018, 03.38 AM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.5/5

Worth your buck

Story: Rizwan Ahmed (Rohan Mehra) leaves Allahabad behind and with it, the small-town mentality, too. He moves to Mumbai, a city with soaring skyscrapers and dreams that fly even higher. His one wish is to work with his idol Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan), but the greedy and manipulative world of money, power and the stock market draws Rizwan in, a little too fast.

Review: A wily movie character once said, "Greed is good. It's a thought that sums up the very concept of stock markets pretty well. Millions of people around the world invest in shares with the ultimate aim of making a quick buck. Baazaar is a film based on the share market and it plays up the idea of morals over money, or vice versa, depending on which character from the film you root for. For audiences saturated with love stories and family sagas, the edgy thrills of a crime drama like Baazaar, can offer a whole new entertainment experience. One of the highlights of the film is Saif Ali Khan's performance. The streak of grey in his hair is just as sexy as the grey shades of the role. Even though the film has a strong hangover of Michael Douglas' Wall Street (1987), this thriller about money, money and more money does offer a rich blend of entertainment.

The first thing to note about Baazaar is the fact that it's a slickly made film. It is based in Mumbai and it chronicles the world of stock brokers, power brokers, businessmen, industrialists and a host of rich and powerful people. The film's production design by Shruti Gupte captures the opulence of the setting very well. The background score by John Stewart Eduri is in perfect sync with the thriller theme, too. Director Gauravv K Chawla manages to create a gripping atmosphere for most part of the runtime.

The writing by Aseem Arora is good, but the writer could have avoided a few loopholes. Most of the situations in Baazaar play out identically to the events in Wall Street. The screenplay does take a while to setup the plot, but the second half of the film picks up pace and throws up a few surprises, too. Saif Ali Khan's character is a shrewd Gujarati businessman and the little Gujarati touches in the dialogue as well as the setting are fantastic. They make the film's Dalal Street setup look authentic. The characters are all grey and there is no inclination to whitewash the grey shades. Every character in Baazaar has its own moral compass. The narrative could have been tauter with fewer songs.

Saif Ali Khan as a suave, shrewd, but typical Gujarati guy is the best thing about the film. His twang and his good-looks create the perfect air for the character. Saif's natural finesse adds to the role, but the actor really shines through in the many shades of grey. Debutant Rohan Mehra is pretty good too. The young actor shows ease and control in his very first performance. Radhika Apte is very good in the role of a young and competitive stock broker. Chitrangda Singh and Manish Chaudhary, in smaller roles, still make big impact.

Baazaar uses plenty of stock market jargon and showcases complex ideas like insider trading and financial manipulation with ease. It's great to see an edgy story unfold in completely new settings in a Hindi film. The movie has a lot of hustle and power play from the world of industrialists, politicians and money brokers, and that makes for a smart investment, especially for movie buffs

Baazaar' movie review: Sharp, edgy and makes for an engaging watch
Anita Iyer

Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan) is a ruthless businessman in Mumbai. He makes his money by buying and selling company shares and is called a 'fraud' by his business community, media, and society at large. He is uninhibited and all he cares about is profit.
Rizwan Ahmed (Rohan Mehra)is an ambitious boy from the small town of Allahabad. He idolises Shakun and makes working with him his ultimate goal in life. Paths cross and he meets Radhika Apte, a competitive stock-broker in the firm he begins his flight with.
Director Gauravv Chawla takes us to the greedy world of a stockbroking firm, where brokers are under tremendous pressure and resort to unethical means to make an extra commission. The ultimate goal for the different corrupt characters in Baazaar is to make money, be it the top businessman, broker, politician or a political agent.
The Jain touch to Shakun Kothari's character with him using phrases like 'Micchami Dukkadam' (I seek your forgiveness) even as he sabotages people's lives shows how thick-skinned he has become. Few grey hair strands, Gujarati dialogues and we have a businessman who loves his family but would also not blink before taking advantage of them and his friends for 'dhanda' (business). Saif Ali Khan, fresh from the success of 'Sacred Games' fits in effortlessly as Shakun and doesn't have to go the extra mile.

Debutant Rohan Mehra is impressive as the small-town youngster with a hunger to achieve bigger things in life. Although he sometimes lacked the range required for his character of Rizwan, he might get better with films.
Radhika Apte belongs to the Dalal street. She is charismatic and ready to 'cross the line' to take the extra risk to make money. But movie-goers could foresee where her character was leading to, as they could with Chitrangada Singh's, (Mandira) who is the wife of Shakun Kothari. They both perform well and help build the momentum for the two men.
Expect a lot of dialogue-baazi as these unidimensional characters converse with each other in idioms, making either threats or statements, which can be off-putting at times.
The first half is perfectly paced and although things fall in place too conveniently for Shakun and Rizwan, we want to know more. Don't attempt to find realism as it could disappoint you. But the same can't be said about the second half, which could have been salvaged with crisp editing.
Two scenes towards the climax were unnecessary and just tested our patience. And Bollywood's fixation with songs - do we always need them? None of the songs stayed with us and will make you puff as you wait for them to finish.
The closer we came to a stockbroking floor in Bollywood was in Mani Ratnam's 'Guru', so Baazaar is a fresh welcome from all the love sagas and crime-related stories in Bollywood.
The movie caters to the mass audience and introduces us to ideas like insider trading, media manipulations, political rigging with great ease, even for the uninitiated.
Baazaar is sharp, edgy and engulfs you into the big bad world of stock exchange trading. It will leave you thoroughly entertained.

Baazaar' review:
Saif Ali Khan is splendid as a ruthless tycoon
Newcomer Rohan Mehra as Rizwan Ahmad is a letdown in this stock market thriller

Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Chief Reporter
09:42 October 25, 2018
Chitrangada Singh 4
Actor Saif Ali Khan is splendid as a ruthless, company-gobbling tycoon who manipulates for a living in Baazaar.

Set against the murky world of stock trading in Mumbai, Khan plays the devilish guru of greed Shakun Kothari. He's a self-made Gujarati billionaire who revels in hostile takeovers and playing dirty. He's virile and virulent. However, it's evident that Khan is having a ball with this landmark role as he embraces his flaws with admirable flair. He's delightful as an amoral suited-up villain who rips apart his opponents with absolute ruthlessness.

Gems like "I rely on maths, you rely on emotions are constantly doled out by Khan's character. It's undoubtedly cheesy, but Khan manages to pull it off with flair.

A big let down in Baazaar though is the newcomer Rohan Mehra as Rizwan Ahmad, a small-town boy from Allahabad with big dreams to conquer Mumbai's stock trading world and grab Kothari's attention by any means. He idolises him, and his entry into his inner circle and empire is unconvincing.

The thriller takes a downward turn as soon as a coltish Mehra appears onscreen.

This cautionary tale about greed, power and morality placed the onus on this young actor to take the bullish story forward, but Mehra simply isn't up to the task.

He's suitably gawkish, but crumbles under all that pressure to perform with seasoned actors. His naive act is utterly implausible and he lacks the magnetic appeal of Khan. While you are tempted to go easy on the new boy on the block, you may feel let down as a viewer by this terrible miscast. This boy has a chip on his shoulder about being from a small-town, and it's just grating.

Mehra lacks charisma and that brings the thriller crashing at several points with his insipid act.

The movie with its fair share of ups and downs is a celebration of the morally ambiguous boys's club. Fortunately, the women in this crime saga Radhika Apte and Chitrangada Singh have worthy roles to play. Though their characters aren't as fully-fleshed out as the men, they aren't reduced to a trophy wife (Singh) or a pretty girlfriend (Apte).

Apte as a glamorous stock hustler and Ahmad's girlfriend is a treat to watch, while Singh as Mandira, the moneyed and classy better half of Kothari, does what's expected of her.

The movie soars when Kothari swoops in for his kill, but takes a nose-dive when the voice of reason and the good vs evil narrative rears its head.

There's something cathartic about seeing unapologetically evil men operate their business and Kothari is a kingpin of that. His lack of remorse is wonderful to watch.

The first half of the film moves at a decent pace, but the second half is riddled with a few fractured turns. Why did Kothari take the wide-eyed Ahmad under his wing and into his inner circle so swiftly? Why didn't Ahmad see red when a shark-like Kothari was being uncharacteristically nice towards him? These are a few questions that will come up. While the thriller set against the concrete jungle of Mumbai isn't particularly memorable, its lead player Kothari has a longer shelf-life. Watch this solely for Khan.

Oh nice! As expected the movie is receiving positive feedback overall so far. Hope it translates into box office results.
From the trailer it was evident that it's going to be a slick, gripping crime drama. If audience like it it'll gain momentum in the coming days.
