There was a news about Black Panther being sent for Oscar and Marvel paying more attention to BP than Infinity war in Award season.

I watched BP in theater but was not impressed much. It was alright movie But not better than IW or many other Superhero movies. Why is it being sooo hyped like it is the best thing happening in HW?

Do you really think that this movie deserve this hype?

Actually another reason is that black cast movie did so well internationally and setting new benchmark. So extra praise was there. For breaking racism bias...

Due to the hype around this one, even I went and watched it in theatre.. but it was like any other Marvel origin movie.. actually it was pretty basic.. I understand that it is an all black cast and first black superhero muvi.. but that's no reason to consider it for Oscars.. Movie was just okayish for me compared to other Marvel films..

I think three things it had were the reason it did so well and is liked my many.

(A) as Deepu said, the black pride thing was done very fruitfully and in an amazingly normal way, no forcing.

(B) Kill Monger was a great villain. A villain with whom people can sympathize and many may even consider following him.

(C) It looked great. The 3D effects were good.

Plus the movie wasn't bad, it was a nice time pass flick, which didn't got boring.

I agree with point B.

Agree movie was not bad, but still it was not that good that they prefer it over IW. IW was far better.

for point A- They showed it in normal way but people are hyping it in abnormal way for Black pride only.

No.
The plot was basic. The CGI work was horrible. The film itself was derivative.
It only got the hype because of the black pride issue and reviewers did not want to be perceived as racist, so they went a bit over board. Very similar to what happened with reviewers pretending A Wrinkle in Time is not as big a mess as it was.

I thought it was average, much like most Marvel origin films.

Oscars are facing dwindling ratings. Which is why they wanted to add the popular category. Also they have been facing racism allegations for two years now. Now that the popular category is scrapped, Black Panther has a decent chance of scoring a nomination.

As for Disney, they are never going to push Infinity War. That film will never get anything more than technical nominations. Disney is starving for main Oscar nominations. They will push for the one which has a chance. But I think if Mary Poppins get good reviews, Disney will abandon BP in favor of MPR. That film has a great chance of appealing to the Oscar crowd.

Additionally, with Crazy Rich Asians getting great reviews and being a genuine crowd pleaser and Widows looking like it will follow CRA's lead, I think Black Panther might just not make the cut. Maybe they will just give consolation nominations for Creed 2.
