  • However, Dara was also not completely loyal to Nadira Banu as he took an orphan dancing girl named "Rano dil" into his harem . The other famous concubine of Dara was "Udaipuri Mahal". After Dara's death both Rano dil and Udaipuri were put inside Aurangzeb's Harem. Udaipuri bore Aurangzeb a son while Rano dil remained faithfull to her 1st partner.
I just read a bit about Dara. His exile, defeat and death is tragic.I am not sure how 'Dara' can be made the Hero..He was liberal..and a patron of arts..He married his cousin with the help of his sister. They had 8 children(That made me laugh😆)

Thanks for this one.. But the version I read was that Dara had only one wife n no harem or concubines. Not much is known of him detail even though he was a crown prince coz eventually he lost the battle to the throne and the one who wins is always the one who writes history.

This movie may be a hit coz of all the names attached to it n kjo marketing... but its gonna suck big time.

Udaipuri is an interesting character-she was the concubine of both Dara and Aurangzeb..and was a favorite of Aurangzeb!I hope someone plays this role!

Udaipuri Mahal was a slave girl, and not a wedded wife of Aurangzeb, which is proved by Aurangzeb's own words. When her son Muhammad Kam Bakhsh intrigued with the enemy at the siege of Jinji, Aurangzeb angrily remarked, 'A slave-girl's son comes to no good. The contemporary Venetian traveler Manucci speaks of her as a Georgian[2] slave-girl of Dara Shikoh's harem, who, on the downfall of her first master, became the concubine of his victorious rival. She seems to have been a very young woman at the time, as she first became a mother in 1667, when Aurangzeb was verging on fifty. She retained her youth and influence over the Emperor till his death, and was the darling of his old age. Under the spell of her beauty he pardoned the many faults of Kam Bakhsh and overlooked her freaks of drunkenness, which must have shocked so pious a Muslim.

Kam Baksh is also called 'a dancing-girl's son'. Orme speaks of her as a Circassian, evidently on the authority of Manucci. Aurangzeb had a special liking for Udaipuri Mahal, so her co-wives were very jealous of her. He bestowed upon her all the accouterments of a Queen. In 1678 in a battle against the Rana of Chittor and the Raja of Marwar, Udaipuri accompanied Aurangzeb. In the 28th year of Aurangzeb's reign, Udaipuri was in Aurangabad or Ahmadnagar with Aurangzeb.

In a letter written by Aurangzeb on his death-bed to Kam Bakhsh, he says "Udaipuri, your mother, who has been with me during my illness, wishes to accompany [me in death]." From this expression Tod infers, "Her desire to burn shows her to have been a Rajput."

When Aurangzeb died she grieved deeply[citation needed] and died within four months at Gwalior, in July 1707. Bahadur Shah I carried out her dying wishes with regard to her household and forwarded her remains for burial in a grove close to the shrine of Qutb-al Aqtab, Delhi.

Nadira committed suicide😲

The unfortunate princess

Parvez Mahmood TFT Issue: 24 Mar 2017

Parvez Mahmood tells the story of Princess Nadira Banu Begum beloved and loyal companion of the ill-fated Prince Dara Shikoh

"O beloved prince! O beloved sons! Now are your misfortunes at their height! Now has the hour come for your lives to end. With your blood the cruelty of Aurangzeb will be assuaged. Would to God that my life could suffice to quench the thirst of this ferret, or that with it I could restore yours, then would not Aurangzeb be so oppressive to you, nor so cruel to me! What could become of me after such a loss? Could I survive without sons, without a husband? Could I endure the deeper disgrace of becoming a concubine to Aurangzeb? God does not delight in this my evil state. But since there is now no other remedy, by taking my life I put an end to all my pains, and this tyrant gathers in by my death a portion of the spoils intended to grace his triumph.'

She is playing Jahanara Begum who was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women during her father Shah Jahan's rule. She earned her own income from a number of villages and owned gardens. She was the eldest daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, was also the older sister of Crown prince Dara Shikoh and Emperor Aurangzeb and became the First Lady (Padshah Begum) of the Mughal Empire (after her mother died), at the young age of 17. She brought up her siblings and helped her father to get out of mourning. Jahanara was also instrumental in arranging Dara Shikoh's marriage to Begum Nadira Banu.
Jahanara Begum was an extremely powerful at the Mughal Court, where Shah Jahan entrusted her with charge of the Imperial Seal and took her advice on administrative and political issues. Unlike the other royal princesses, she lived in her own palace, and not Agra Fort. When the war of succession broke out, Jahanara supported her brother Dara Shikoh and Shah Jahan asked Jahanara to intervene. After Aurangzeb ascended the takht, she joined her father in imprisonment at the Agra Fort, and looked after him until his death (1666). But after their father's death she and Aurangzeb patched up and he gave her the title, Empress of Princesses.

More about her character on wikipedia but don't know how much of it we'll see in the movie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jahanara_Begum

I just googled Jahanara Begum and couldn't believe the bizarre stories of her life at an early age of 17 years after her mother's death...😲

It's a family drama .
Jahanara and Dara were very close as siblings and she supported his claim for throne. Both are quite positive according to history.
He is a lover of art and quite the nice guy ,faithful to his wife Nadira .

Aurangzeb is the evil we know from history textbooks. He was supported by Roshanara, the other sister. They both are the evil pair.

All four siblings are interesting characters. Aurangzeb ,the best character for screen.

Kjo ke pr team ne gossips shuru toh kardi. God knows who will be shown in the film.

But who are the competent directors for these genre in Bollywood. Though jodha akbar was also not historically accurate I find that movie far better than slb's one. I think ashutosh can do good job at this.
