Is SLB Even That Good?

I personally think he didn't do full justice to Bajirao and Padmavat, is work is a little shoddy tbh

He was better before Saawariya but I feel like somewhere something is always missing in most of his films.

I thought he could have done much better in the ones with Ranveer and Deepika. I like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam but I'm sure if I watched it now I'll find faults and I only watched half of Guzaarish on TV but I enjoyed what I saw. I've been meaning to watch Black now for years but never got down to it. I really need to because I've only heard good things about that one.

SLB...ruined every movie for me...other than HDDCS, Black and Khamoshi.

SLB is a difficult person to describe.
He made Khamoshi which was such a simple yet beautiful movie.
Black was another good movie, but its main strong point was the performance of the three people, Rani, AB and that little girl.
Guzarish could have been great, HR just shone past the shoddy screenplay and half baked script.
But apart from that his works always favored style over substance, and hence movies are beautiful when you watch them in big screen but feel so meh and "cannot finish it" when watched in smaller screen.

I like SLB's HDDCS, RL and Devdas, the characters were all OTT, but I felt they were right for a the family drama.

Oh I forgot about Devdas 😆 That and Dil Se are the two old SRK movies that I didn't like. Back then I liked everything with SRK.

He is good when he works at leisure but since Ramleela he is working timebound so there are few shoddy portions he leave behind in his quest for movie magic. His movies are aesthetically pleasing. Connect to the audiences visually but a beating heart is what is missing in his movies these days. They are as good as tussauds figurines. But he is still miles ahead of many pretentious filmmakers. The only movie of his that had conviction and a beating heart was khamoshi. In HDDCS he was extremely partial towards sameer.. It was Ajay's skill as an actor which rose above the evident unfair treatment. In devdas he was completely partial towards parvathi. In Black he backed Debraj blindly. In Saawariya it was all the way Sakeena. In Guzaarish it was Sofia again it was Hrithik who rose above the shoddy screenplay and clinched his role else the director actually was blind in Sofia's love. In RamLeela he was madly n deeply in love with Ram and was extremely partial to him it was Deepika's screen presence and her chemistry with Ranveer that made her hold her ground. In Bajirao Mastani he was empathising with Kashibai so was unfair towards the development of the love between peshwa and mastani. And finally in padmaavat he was partial towards khilji and his thirst for world dominance.. here again Deepika held the ground with her screen presence and subtle nuances else Sanjay didn't even bother connecting the audience with the love between Padma abd Rawal.

No he is not. His treatment of Padmavaat especially the Jauhar scene explains his shallow approach in his movies. He is all about grandeur and aesthetics of scene. He neither can tap into human emotions nor can he portray them on screen. Its all about the outer beauty for him.
