Choreographer Frank Gatson Jr on Fanney Khan: You cannot give Aishwarya Rai dance steps that look too young

Frank Gatson Jr. has choreographed some of the greatest singers such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez, just to name a few. The ace-choreographer is choreographing a special song in Fanney Khan which will be picturised on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who will be seen as the Indian Madonna in the music video.

When the makers approached Frank for the song, the brief given to him was that he needed to come up with something that wasn't too "Bollywood", which was a challenge for the choreographer. Frank told Mumbai Mirror, "That was a challenge because music is supposed to tell you what to do but this song's beats were essentially Indian, and I wanted to stay true to the culture. However, it's turned out to be an international number."

Speaking about Aishwarya in paticular, Frank revealed that age-appropriate choreography will always trump over whatever is cool and current. "You cannot give Ash dance steps that look too young. She is not 19, she's a woman and a mother. I had to make it likeable," Frank stated.

Gatson Jr. added, "She was so happy with the way the sequence shaped up, she hugged me and introduced me to her family."

Talking about Hollywood's perception of Bollywood and working in Fanney Khan, Frank concluded, "The West sees Bollywood as a big deal, we talk about Indian movies all the time. I loved working on Fanney Khan, it was like working on a version of (the Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger-starrer Oscar-winning musical) Chicago."

Directed by Atul Manjrekar, Fanney Khan also stars Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Fanney Khan is slated to release on August 3, 2018.
