At the outset, this is not a typical RKH movie filled with dollops of humour (which is there in bits and pieces but not spread out all through), but apart from that, there are many boxes that are ticked. Maybe because it is a biopic and the treatment is purposely different..but then neither is it like a Anurag Kashyap movie..it strikes the right balance between conveying important parts of someone's life in an engaging manner. The flaw though is, it is difficult to genuinely feel sorry for Sanjay Dutt. I walked out of the movie, with Sunil Dutt saahab and Kamlesh's being the breakout character.
The story focuses on two bonds in particular, the father-son bond and the friendship between Sanju and Kamli. RKH has always excelled with showing male bonding in his movies and this one remains true to the same too. Also all his movies have catchphrases which gain cult status. This one has some too..but I will not reveal it 😆
I did feel editing was not spot on..and the whole repetitive "I am not a terrorist" thing went on and on and on..
Music - Badhiya was mercilessly chopped off, but Ruby Ruby and Kar Har Maidan were absolute winners..The whole drug rehab sequence is possibly my favourite part of the movie..it was powerful and emotionally stirring
The first half focusses on the friendship and the second half - the father-son bonding truly comes into its own...I kept feeling like Paresh R was not suitable, till when Dutt sahab dies, it does hit you and I definitely missed having him around on the screen..
RK was inconsistent in the first half, but from the drug rehab sequence to the end of the movie..he was just outstanding
Vicky Kaushal took the cake as the lovable and supportive Kamli! He was absolutely brilliant to say the least! The shining star of the movie.
Manisha was pitch perfect in all her scenes.. what a delight to watch! Something I loved a lot about this movie, is the understated love and care between Sunil Dutt and Nargis. It wasnt explicitly shown, but the love and respect and understanding between them in those nano seconds was truly beautiful
Somehow I kept wishing, they would have taken Boman in a more important role. Anushka, Jim, Sonam, Boman in their parts did well.
RKH delivers a better movie than PK for sure.
