Sanju movie review: Ranbir Kapoor is flawless in Rajkumar Hirani's Bollywood-ised biopic of Sanjay Dutt

The first thing you notice about Ranbir Kapoor in Sanju isn't his uncanny similarity to Sanjay Dutt, or that he's a fantastic actor with the ability to morph into his subject like a chameleon. It is that there's absolutely nothing in Ranbir's portrayal to complain about.

Still from Sanju. YouTube screengrab

Still from Sanju. YouTube screengrab

This isn't merely a case of "look how easily Ranbir has slipped into Sanjay Dutt's shoes" this is about the way in which every single aspect of the controversial actor has been imbibed by the ever-so-talented Kapoor from his slouching walk, his goofy eyes that reveal so much pain and also a yearning for pleasure, to the way he talks (a mix of Bumbaiya and posh English) and the way he acts.

This is a meta performance. Ranbir Kapoor acts like Sanjay Dutt, who is an actor by profession; imagine the Inception-level of preparation Kapoor would have had to undergo.

Sanju is so much more than Sanjay Dutt though. And Ranbir Kapoor. Yes, the film serves primarily as a platform for Ranbir Kapoor and his talent as an actor to show us the intricacies of Sanjay Dutt's life. But one person's story rarely makes a good film. Sanju is as much about Paresh Rawal's restrained performance, as a helpless father torn between love for his son and his moral code.

It is as much about Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor and Dia Mirza, who each play memorable characters in Dutt's life. Manisha is particularly refreshing as Nargis Dutt and it is a delight to watch her on the big screen.

Also read Why Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju will be considered a unique film, regardless of its box office fate

The first 90 minutes of Sanju, however, belong to the heart-warming bromance between Ranbir as Dutt, and Vicky Kaushal, as his friend from the US, Kamli. It is through their friendship, and Dutt's relationship with his father, that the plot of Sanju unfurls.

Sanju presents the intimate details of Sanjay Dutt's life in a typically Hirani-esque manner. There's an emotional message in every potential scene; the film doesn't attempt to decode Sanjay Dutt or justify his life. Neither does it try to whitewash his flaws. Credit to Hirani for not painting Dutt with larger than life strokes. But there is a Bollywood-ish tinge to every scene.

Through his first shot in his debut film, and the songs he sings with his girlfriend Ruby (Sonam Kapoor); through his fight with drugs and his stint in the US, where he spends his last few moments with mother Nargis; through his moments of friendship with a real friend (Vicky Kaushal) or a fake friend who gets him hooked onto drugs (Zubin Mistry, played by the wonderful Jim Sarbh) Sanju is a Bollywood-ised account of Sanju Dutt's life. It's dramatic, calculatingly exciting and yet, cinematic.

Sanju's biggest accomplishment are undoubtedly its performances. There are genuinely some shots where you won't be able to tell you're looking at Ranbir Kapoor, and not Sanjay Dutt. Vicky Kaushal shines, holding his own in the fun moments as well as serious scenes. Sanju is a gripping film, but one treads with caution.

Editor's pick Ranbir Kapoor on Sanju: Not a propaganda film but an honest portrayal of a flawed human being

Caution because the agenda of Sanju is clear: to present an interesting and misunderstood story. To tell audiences that there are two sides to everything.

And there is no doubt that Sanju is a great story. Even though this is so obviously Sanjay Dutt's life account, we are told Kamlesh's perspective, as the friend of a superstar/drug addict/limelight hogger. We are told Vinnie Diaz's perspective (Anushka Sharma) a biographer who slowly but surely falls in love with Sanjay Dutt's story.

It is the performances in Sanju that often make up for the one-dimensional writing.

Hirani makes it easier for audiences to engage with the film by broadly dividing Dutt's life into two parts his fight with drug addiction, and the jail term for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. But Sanjuseems stuck in its own mould. It rarely rises above the boundaries it creates for itself. Hirani sticks so close to what he knows best mixing commercial elements into a story with potential that Sanju ends up feel like a version of Dutt's life for children; a sanitised fable of sorts. You are very often left wanting more. What about the greys? What about the philosophical conflicts?

This gap is filled by Ranbir Kapoor a fine performer who understands his subject matter and audience. The film best moments belong to Ranbir and Vicky Kaushal, and Ranbir and Paresh Rawal. Sanju is high on emotions, and what triumphs is friendship, trust and the beautiful bond between a father and son.

Glimpses into the film industry and the underworld are minimal. We are not given an insight into the socio-cultural context in which Sanjay Dutt's life unfolded. It would have been nice to see the world that Dutt inhabited (and now inhabits) with a little more depth. But worry not, the physicality of every character makes up for the lack of context. Each character looks their part. Aiding the narrative is a hummable soundtrack that one may not remember over time but works within the film.

Ultimately Sanju is Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal's film. Both actors pull even the flawed parts of the film together, and neatly wrap the histrionics with flavour and variety. Sanju is an entertaining film, and has all the elements of a blockbuster but one wishes the honesty and nuance went beyond just the performances.

SANJU MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Updated: Jun 29, 2018, 12.20 PM ISTCritic's Rating: 4/5
Sanju Story: Sanju explores the two big stories of movie star Sanjay Dutt's dramatic and controversial life. Sanju (Ranbir Kapoor) recalls two crucial chapters from his own life as writer Winnie (Anushka Sharma) prepares to write his biography. He gives a lowdown on his tryst with drugs and then his experiences in the Arms Case and the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Sanju Review
: One man, many lives is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sanjay Dutt. Rajkumar Hirani's film presents a vivid and very dramatic look in this biopic of sorts. The film starts off with Sanjay Dutt (Ranbir Kapoor) wanting a writer for his biography even while he's preparing to surrender himself to the Supreme Court's judgement in the Arms Act case. A film writer fails him miserably so Sanju turns to a more established writer Winnie (Anushka Sharma) for help. His confessions and recollections to Winnie are intimate and give us deep insights of the highs and lows of his life which is nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Like any Rajkumar Hirani film, Sanju blends humour with drama effortlessly. While it doesn't reveal much about Sanju's relationships and marriages, it does tell a strong story of an unbreakable bond between a father son and a best friend. In fact, Sanjay's relationship with his father Sunil Dutt (Paresh Rawal) forms the major part of this story and some of the most heart wrenching and touching moments in the film belong to both of them.

Manisha Koirala as Nargis Dutt, Sanju's mother has a brief role, but the scenes between the father mother and son are incredibly moving.
There's also his best friend Kamlesh (Vicky Kaushal) who's one of the most important character in Sanju's story. And also its one that leaves a positive impact. Sadly, the film doesn't touch upon Dutt's personal life in the same detail. Maanyata (Dia Mirza) his wife's strong presence is felt right through the film, but his earlier marriages and even the birth of his first child, daughter Trishala has been completely left out. The absence of these aspects does feel a bit odd.

The first half is extremely gripping and the second half is spent on elaborating on his court cases and the stress on the fact that he's not a terrorist. That works out well in the movie, and really helps create some great drama as the story of an ernest father and his reckless son plays out simultaneously.

Ranbir Kapoor is just as good as his reputation. To state that he's an incredible actor who fills Sanjay Dutt's role with gravitas and spunk is stating the obvious. That's expected from a talented actor like Ranbir. But what he does best in Sanju, is that he delivers the central character's swag and nonchalance in the most effortless manner. Whether he's dancing like a hysterical man under the influence of drugs or he's the broken, emotional wreck just staring blank, Ranbir portrays a variety of emotions and grey shades with flair. He's the heart and soul of this film. Vicky Kaushal impresses with his funny and dramatic character as much as the leading man.

AR Rahman, Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose's music manages to create the period feel and set the right mood too. Songs like Kar Har Maidan Fateh and Ruby Ruby create the perfect atmosphere. The background score is top notch too. The drugs infused phase of Sanju's life is the most impressive. It has some fantastic visuals and some crazy emotions too.

Like all of Rajkumar Hirani's films, Sanju is detailed, well-written and has plenty of memorable moments. The father-son saga, the many references to old Hindi film music and lyricists is fantastic. With Sanjay Dutt's biopic, Hirani has been able to put his personal friendship aside and present an engaging story with the kind of finesse it needs. The film has a critique that establishes Sanjay Dutt as the king of bad choices. Sanju is definitely one of the year's best films, but it could have been so.much more. Even with what's missing, this is still an incredible story of an actor, a hero but most importantly a son who made many mistakes and lived one heck of a life.

Sanju Movie Review Quicker: Ranbir Kapoor Has Done The UNIMAGINABLE!

Ranbir Kapoor has done the unimaginable! He's not Ranbir Kapoor, he's not an actor, he's Sanjay Dutt in the film.

June 29, 2018

Sanju movie review quicker: The movie starts with Piyush Mishra writing a biography for Sanjay Dutt aka Sanju (Ranbir Kapoor). Everything gets messed up & verdict for Sanju to get arrested gets out. To build up his image Maanayata Dutt (Dia Mirza) contacts Winnie (Anushka Sharma), the renowned biographer.

Winnie decides to hear the story of Sanju and here starts the flashback. Rajkumar Hirani takes story to the past where Sanju shot his first picture & where he got addicted to the drugs. Introducing characters like Sanju's friend Kamlesh (Vicky Kaushal), Zubin (Jim Sarbh) & Ruby (Sonam Kapoor) the story is majorly flashback in the first half.

Sanju Movie Review Quicker: Ranbir Kapoor Has Done The UNIMAGINABLE!

Ranbir Kapoor has done the unimaginable! He's not Ranbir Kapoor, he's not an actor, he's Sanjay Dutt in the film. The phase of drug addiction is extremely well portrayed by him. Vicky Kaushal is second best till now. He has perfected Gujarati accent & is the best addition to the film. The song Ruby Ruby by A.R.Rahman serves its purpose

Written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film will also stars an ensemble cast in addition to Ranbir Kapoor which includes Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Vicky Kaushal, Sonam Kapoor and Dia Mirza amongst others.

Sanju Has Excellent Opening - Third Best For 2018
Friday 29 June 2018 12.45 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Sanju has taken an excellent opening of 45-50%. It has taken the third best opening of the year after Baaghi 2 and Race 3 in terms of occupancy. It is the best opening at metro multiplexes but the mass belts are a bit lower especially places like CI, UP and Bihar. The best opening for Sanju is Mumbai city, Delhi city and Bangalore.

Still there is a good chance that the opening day could be the highest of the year as Race 3 was pre Eid and collections slowed in the afternoon shows and also the advance for the evening shows for Sanju is very strong. Race 3 had collected 27.50 crore nett apprx on day one which is the highest opening day of 2018 for a Hindi film and Sanju has a chance to beat it. Avengers Infinity War is the highest opening of 2018 for any film at 31 crore nett plus and this is a tougher task for Sanju.

Baaghi 2 had the best opening in terms of occupancy but it does not come into the picture as far as the day one figures is concerned as it had far lower ticket rates than Sanju and Race 3 and also fewer screens.

The top ten openings in 2018 in terms of occupancy in morning shows are as follows

1. Baaghi 2 - 57.5%

2. Race 3 - 50%

3. Sanju - 47.5%

4. Padmaavat - 42.5%

5. Veere Di Wedding - 35%

6. Raazi - 30%

7. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 27.5%

8. Padman - 22.5%

9. Hichki - 22.5%

10. Raid - 20%
