ABC Apologizes To 'Quantico' Fans Offended By The Portrayal Of Indians In 'The Blood of Romeo' Episode

June 7, 2018 12:14 PM PDT

Priyanka Chopra in 'Quantico' (ABC)

ABC is offering up an apology to fans who were offended by a recent episode of "Quantico," that portrayed Indians as terrorists who were trying to frame Pakistan in a terror plot.

In the episode, "The Blood of Romeo," Priyanka Chopra's character Alex Parrish stops a plot by Indian nationalists to carry out a nuclear attack in NYC and frame Pakistan for the attack. The terror plot unfolds just days before a summit is meant to happen in Kashmir, a region that has been fought over on multiple occasions by India and Pakistan. Some fans of the show around the globe were upset with the portrayal of Indians in the plot and took to Twitter to sound off.

Many fans directly called out Priyanka, who is a beloved actresses from India, for willingly going along with such a controversial plot line.

ABC issued the following statement to Access addressing the controversial episode.

"ABC Studios and the executive producers of 'Quantico' would like to extend an apology to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, 'The Blood of Romeo.' The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn't create the show, nor does she write or direct it. She has no involvement in the casting of the show or the storylines depicted in the series," the ABC statement read.

"'Quantico' is a work of fiction. The show has featured antagonists of many different ethnicities and backgrounds, but in this case we inadvertently and regrettably stepped into a complex political issue. It was certainly not our intention to offend anyone," ABC continued.

Sure she didn't write it direct it or cast anyone but she literally read the script and they do several readings with the cast too. And still she went on with it. Hate of any kind is uncalled for but Priyanka deserves the brickbats and the criticism. I have been one of her well wishers but this truly disappointed me. How are you gonna tell your sob stories about racism and make a whole narrative out of it as the empowered brown woman trying to break the stereotype and then go ahead and participate in the strengthening of it ? Cause because of some bs show. It's such a sellout move.

Thank you. I am just going to follow you around liking your posts on this topic. You said what I meant to say more eloquently and elegantly.

The over riding emotion for me too is disappointment because PC made this thing about brown woman and empowerment.

If Priyanka could do something she would have, she probably couldn't and ABC recognizes that too. You can't expect her to get sued by the channel for people that attack her everyday for various reasons like helping Rohingya refugee children or wearing a dress while meeting Modi anyways

Priyanka receives the script for the upcoming episode on Friday and they start shooting on Monday for that episode. The casting, production and everything is already in place and they have to shoot on Monday. There's really nothing Priyanka can do to stop it without costing the channel and production a lot of money and likely getting sued herself. If she could do something she would have, I don't think anyone would want this kind of backlash.

Do you have an original thought in your head when it comes to a defense of PC or do you just pull at straws ? Not every single person trashes PC. If she is the self proclaimed face of representing Indians and talks about racism, she has to take a stand regardless of criticism she faces.

PC is the face of the show, she is not a FOB nobody from India. She has money, power than most actresses have. She does not really need ABC unless she is desperate to fit in.

Indian diaspora in the US don't need PC to represent us. We have other people who represent us and people like our parents who have quietly faced the battle and stood strong. But when she goes on talk shows and talks about racism to get sympathy, she needs to stand up for what she says she believes in.

She is not the only one. Meghan Markle was loud and proud about biracial. She also threw a big fat black royal wedding. Yet she will forever be scrutinized for every action because she is a self proclaimed feminist. You self proclaim yourself as something, then walk the walk regardless of the consequences. Else STFU.

Wow. Full offence I won't even bother to give her my benefit of the doubt like you are because this ain't about the trolls. I dont expect her to stand up for those people. I expect her to stand up for brown men and women. This woman gave thousands of interviews about breaking stereotypes and this one time that she could have actually stopped something she didn't? ABC would have sued her for her protesting about showing brown people as terrorists? Do y'all hear yourself? The PR damage that could have caused the network I can't even imagine. Esp when this network literally cancelled their highest rated show because the main actor called an African-American woman an 'ape'. That's how sensitive things are at ABC. So,kindly keep these 'helpless Priyanka' narratives to yourself. That woman was okay with her kind being treated as a terrorist, she participated in it. End of story.

No, they would have sued her for stalling production.

Also who knows if she had an issue with the story or not. They've had terrorists of every ethnicity on the show, so it's not like they're only showing brown people has terrorists
