I think people are misunderstanding what he means. Indian kids, especially celebrity kids are often expected to follow in the footsteps of their parents. They can experience undue pressure to be just like their parents.

While trophies and medals can be inspiring, they can also be intimidating and overwhelming.

I am interpreting Virat's words to mean that he wants his children to grow without the usual societal pressures. He wants to be Virat Kohli the father first and not Virat Kohli the cricketer. He does not want to cast the shadow of his fame and stature on them and let them grow up to be whoever they choose to be - not be obliged to follow him.

I don't think he's literally going to throw his trophies away. He could keep them in storage. Many local stadiums will be more than happy to receive them and create a Virat Kohli exhibit.

Otherwise, what is he going to do? Get buried/cremated with every award he won?

I like Virat's idea.
He means to say he doesn't want his children to realise that he is the superstar and one of the greatest cricketer of all time Virat, rather just a normal daddy Virat when they are growing up, so they don't end up acting privileged and entitled.

But one thing is confirmed, Virat doesn't have the articulation of Dhoni or Dravid.

I don't think he meant he will literally throw away the trophies. Perhaps he meant it won't be displayed in the house when the kids are growing up. I guess he wants to give the kids a normal upbringing. Fair enough. To each his own.

Virat is generally really good in interviews but this one he hasn't articulated it well.
This is a part of the ESPN interview. It's a nice read though.
