Omg Lamhe is one of my fav films esp one of my fav's of Sri, and I just watched it last week, and I SO AGREE with her about the ending!! I find it too sudden & contrived. I did love this innocent girl who loves this far older man with such purity & intensity, 'win' in the end, but it was so sudden. What worked for the film & what made it a cult film & a hit, was that you somehow end up feeling for the silly, child-like, childish & nice Pooja.. You want her to obtain this man who she has so deeply loved & worshipped for all her life, so you end up overlooking this unbelievable ending for which there were NO clues!!

All thanks to a magician called Sridevi. <3 <3

I mean she was like a 5 yr old child, he loves her, takes care of her, but also hoping to have romantic relationship with her? That was (not as inappropriate as Lamhe) but a little weird

If Sadma had had a happy ending would it have fared a little better commercially in the North? (It was a hit in South) But then it would not be the classic it is

Sadma was inspired by the story of Balu Mahendra (director / writer) and his 17 year old national award winner second wife, Shobha who committed suicide at that age. I will try to dig up an interview. I have always been icked out by that ever since I heard it. So it will always have the tragedy and elements of child-woman-lover.

What saves Moonram Pirai/Sadma for me is the acting.

I feel initially Kamal took care of her selflessly. Later when he fell in love with her and wished to marry her, he felt like I want her to become normal so that we can live a normal life. He got selfish at this time, never thought in his wildest dreams that what if she'll not recognize me. That's exactly what happened. Sridevi couldn't recognize him and that turned out to be his biggest Sadma. 😭

I agree that Lamhe's ending was also not so good. I wish they had remained friends instead of getting married in the end.

Overall it is one of her better Hindi movies

I am just biased I guess against Rishi. 😆 I can't for the life of me understand how he became a successful hero. He with his old man sweaters, no personality, he's just a white blob on screen in many movies with the heroine doing most of the heavy lifting. Later when he was bloated and they cast him as hero with debutants. There is a movie with Divya Bharti that offends me to no end. That they tried to convince people that this vibrant, young, beautiful girl will fall for this ugly, bloated guy. 😡.

He is like he says son of a famous father and father of a famous son who can both act. Only now the roles he takes has made me convinced Rishi can act.

Oh I wrote a mini essay. Did not realize he offended me so much as a hero. 😆. I liked him in Bobby though and with Neetu.

^^Funny how different perception is- I've always found him so annoying & bloody cranky offscreen but seeing even his silly 90s films, there is no doubt in my mind that Rishi is a born actor in a way that most people from his esteemed family are not! It's not a surprise at all to me that he won a NA, back in the days when it meant a lot, at a tender age. RKJr has inherited his talent as much as the Super-Senior RK's. His films today only solidify the fact that he has very good screen presence & is a VERY good actor! Despite being bloated & white, he was somehow charming onscreen.

I can't find the original Moonram Pirai interview with Balu Mahendra. But this one is a good read. It briefly talks about the ending.

TFS.

I liked this line "When I suggested that the end in Moondram Pirai' lacked logic Balu did not disagree but said, "Believe me there's no logic in life.

This is what Sri says about him

A little while ago, you mentioned that you didn't think about your role unless you are on the sets. What about the story narrations, surely you get some idea at that time?

Well, one does get a rough idea about the film during narration but not necessarily. There are some directors who are great story-tellers., while others are great directors. Balu Mahendra's narration of Moondram Pirai (the Tamil original of Sadma), for instant, was a frame to frame narration of the film. Would you believe he took three hours to tell the story?

Btw what 3 movies would you pick @Justmoi

The ending would've been weird even if his change of heart was not sudden and gradual imo

One of the reasons - she looks exactly like her Mom in every way (naturally 😆)

It happens only in movies btw, two peple looking like carbon copies of each other, in reality even twins don't look that similar 😊

When he is "with" her (If you get my drift) wouldn't he inevitably think about her Mom even if he didn't intend to, bcz of the similarity

Betty: Yes, that's exactly what made me feel so damn uncomfortable! She was the Great Amour of his Life, the woman he didn't marry anyone for for some 2 decades & now he just ups & marries her very young daughter???? She was not even 21! It was like, I can't have her. So her daughter will do because I just can't get over the mother! I so so love how much he loved her & how deeply & his attempts to move on with the stylish Anita, but the whole film ending was so strange. I reckon they needed a fairy-tale ending. I didn't even like Chandni's ending much, I wanted Chandni to marry the Vinod Khanna character, lol
