How is Kajol not a female superstar but Madhuri is?

Thanks everyone for taking out the time to reply. So its not hit:flop ratio that counts who's the bigger star or superstar? As nowadays all i hear on forum is whoever has the best hit:flop ratio or better box office record is the bigger star or emerging superstar. Hence i was wondering.

I wish Kajol had done more movies with different actors than just SRK & Ajay.. like her filmography is literally cluttered with Ajay & SRK. Also agree to some who said she's lazy.

OMG what was Kajol smoking to have rejected these movies? I can just imagine how superbly amazing Kajol would have been in Naina's role in KHNH. She would've nailed it. 😭

If Kajol has been able to sell a crap movie, on her shoulders alone, she would have been. She had not reached there yet. (She cannot take the entire credit for Gupt. If so, Urmila or Manoj Bajpayee should take credit for the success of Kaun. In mystery movies, screen play is the important factor).

As someone pointed out, Kajol has lot of female fans, unlike Madhuri who had lot of male fans. Person who buys the ticket will decide who will be the superstar. The reason why Shahid did not become big is, he had mainly female fans.

Number of hits alone cannot determine who is the superstar. If so, Katrina will be a bigger star than these two which is not true).

i have no idea abt madhuri ji's stardom..
or what craze she could generate..
kajol i did observe the fan following bt it was
always the srk-kajol jodi that made public go berserk more..
individually how much kajol could trigger the mass hysteria
may be that is the reason why she is not counted in as
female superstar..i guess her avg looks also stole some due
credit from her n madhuri ji had the beauty n the dance to
earn her that edge ..just a possible explanation..

Honestly I always have felt Madhuri and Kajol are both overrated. Kajol especially I feel have always survived using the popularity she enjoyed being paired with SRK. I know many many people who have always mentioned SRK when talking about Kajol. Again it's not a bad thing but I guess that's one of the many reasons why she couldn't be considered as a superstar. It doesn't help that she is considered average looking by people. She also played safe for most of her career not doing challenging roles. Whereas for Madhuri, yes she was praised to skies for her dancing skills which is probably the only thing I like about her. But I feel she enjoyed super stardom because she at her prime was way more popular than male actors of that time. That said, I honestly feel both are extremely overrated. The only actress I liked from that era is Juhi. Possibly it's also because I only knew Bollywood from 2000s era so I don't feel connected to most heros/heroines up till 2000. But I have watched some old films and that's how I actually liked Juhi.

I don't know exactly what makes one superstar. To me that's just a term to ego boost an actor and mostly done by fans and sensationalised by the media. That said I feel the most important criteria I feel would be that the actor should appeal to a larger category of people. Male, female, rural, urban, Indians, Asians, foreigners, NRIs,etc. That I feel could at least justify their so called superstardom.

Because Kajol's stardom was always as one half of a hit pair.

Also, a great chunk of it had to do with KJo talking her up. She was his first nepo project.😆 He cleverly cut off all competition at the knees, starting, I think, with Juhi Chawla. Karisma made it in spite of him. MD was too big by then.

Not to mention Kajol's always played the same role in every movie. The circumstances changed, the plot (maybe) changed, but the personality of her character was usually the same (minor diff of extrovert, introvert etc.). Except for Gupt, but that was early on in her career.

I'm not terribly fond of MD as an actress but got to admit she was probably the one name from the era who could sell a movie on her own strengths.

Kajol has never been able to sell a movie as her own.

I think she was pregnant with Nysa and hence couldn't do the movie. She also had a miscarriage around that time.
