Nope, I'm not disgusted because it was inspired by another movie, book or anything (will have to wait to see if it's a remake). Please re-read the tweets. The main problem was that this writer developed the 'characters, motives, plotlines, and a story synopsis" for Hichki and Siddharth Malhotra presented the writer's work as his own and did not even acknowledge/ credit the writer or even bother to inform the writer that his script was finally being made into a movie. The writers deserve acknowledgement for the work they put in. Taking someone's work and not crediting the writer for the effort they put in is plagiarism and will only discourage writers.
It's time the public start talking about this. Stealing others' ideas, works should simply not be tolerated and it's time the producers, PHs responsible for this start getting penalised.
P.S. I'm not taking away credit from Hichki nor do I have some vendetta against Rani. In fact, I'm happy people have started discussing more about neurological disorders. I'm glad that the movie is being made, just not the way the producers went about this entire process.

But the thumb rule for any type of freelance art work, is to never give the final draft to your client before you make a contract or get some advanced payment... Very few people will be honest and give you the credit and / or the money that your hard work deserves.

Thank you! It's seems like you're of the few ones who've read the tweets! 😆They may have adapted it, but it was this guy who adapted the script and designed the characterisations etc. He should have gotten credit for this at least.

Oh..I didn't even check the link you provided initially, just gave you the general info about the film. But here the writer hasn't furnished full info. He is mainly disappointed because his work was not acknowledged in a proper manner. It's not clear if they owe him money or any sort of writing credit. He says the character, speech defect, the outline is rather similar, but the main story, other nuances are not. One thing is evident. He has worked on the main idea for months and developed plot line, synopsis etc. He didn't get any feedback/response from sid which is clearly unethical on sid/yrf's part. It's a clear case of plagiarism which can lead to suspension if proper evidence submitted. But it is not in itself a crime. He should come out with complete info/saved records and file a complaint. Hope he gets the justice he deserves. It's a shame that the so called film makers steal someone else's work, idea and pass it off as their own without due credit to the writers and ofcourse even without their knowledge. This practice is widely prevalent in bollywood. There should have been some sort of legal agreement/contract in the initial stage to safeguard the interests of writers from piracy.

When it comes to Bollywood, I am no longer disgusted or shocked when something is plagiarized.
I do wish people would be honest and own up when they remake something or are inspired by something. Nothing wrong with it.

In this case, it does appear that rights to the book were legally obtained.

Lol, please read the tweets and my post above, I have said that I don't have problem with the fact that this is an adaptation, it's that Siddhartha Malhotra stole the credits for the writer (who pretty much wrote the plotlines, characterisations etc. for Hichki). That's the part I'm calling plagiarism. And no, I'm not a rival's fan as I'm not a fan of any actress. I only admire their works and stop at that! 😆

This is what the director has to say:

"I had acquired the rights to make Front of the Class as a Hindi motion picture in 2013. Nishant Kaushik's claims are baseless. He was contacted through Exceed Entertainment and I haven't even met him once. We were looking for writers who could come up with a take on the Front of the Class. We had approached several writers including Nishant. He was given a brief for the film and the story and slant he came up with, was not what we were looking for. So, we did not proceed with him and Exceed was informed about my decision immediately. This was, 2015. Several prominent writers like Amole Gupte, Abbas Tyrewala have worked on the story of Hichki and we have obtained NOC's from them and I thank each one of them for being the creative contributors of Hichki. We have credited all the writers who have worked in our film. So, it is ridiculous that we will not give credit to anyone in particular who has worked hard and contributed for Hichki."

Typically, I tend to favor wronged writers and plagiarism victims because this is rampant in Bollywood.
However, considering that "Hichki" is an outright copy (remake) of "Front Of the Class", an old Hallmark film and well-known book - I find Nishant Kaushik's claims baseless.

I don't blame Nishant Kaushik. There are similarities where he could feel wronged. But the situation is like Battle Royale vs Hunger Games. Many people thought Suzanne Collins copied Battle Royale. While the plot gist is similar - Hunger Games has a very different character arc and delves into different dystopian issues.
